MLT386X power supply

I finally found where the fuse is located on the power supply board. When I tested the fuse with a voltage tester, the needle shot to the right. Does this mean that the fuse is blown or is it good? I'm guessing that it's blown, but not sure. Also, if it is blown, am I going to have to unsolder it to replace it? Any help would be great!!! Thanks!!

  • wanagetdrunk Jan 13, 2009

Thanks for the quick response Daniel! I looked around the fuse area and I'm not seeing the diodes that you're talking about in that area. I do see 3 diodes that sort of surround the big capacitor. Is that the area you are talking about?

  • wanagetdrunk Jan 13, 2009

Thanks for the help lone99star. I retested the fuse just to make sure and both sides read same voltage. On to the next step I guess. I have a big hammer in case of emergencies!!! lol

Hi wanagetdrunk, Nice handle is that a question or a statement? To test the fuse with a voltage meter you will need to test each end of the fuse and make sure the voltage is the same on both ends, in other words you want to make sure the voltage is passing through the fuse. If you have a multimeter set it to ohm's and measure across the fuse,if the fuse is good it will read 0. Let me know if this helps and please rate this solution. lone99star

This meens the fuse is good.
if the fuse is bad you will get no reading.
now that you have gone this far i will take you one step futher.
look for 4 small black diodes that have one stripe on them in the aria of the fuse thay will all be in a group of 4
well this is called the bridge rectifier, with set unpulged read each part as you did with the fuse
but with this part read it once in one directio and then swich your meater leads and read in the other direction
your looking for difrent reading in each direction if the readings peg out to the right then the part is bad meabibg the diode..
for fuse it meens fuse is good.

best of luck,
daniel.

do not test the fuse with power on mode

    lol

it will danige your ohm reading in meater.

if power is on you check it in the ac seting.

checking a fuse is easy in oms seting but do not have power present.

    regards daniel.

hi,the first thing to check with this kind of problem is the power supply section.this requires opening of the back cover. If you are handy with electronics you can check the voltage present at the power board by using a digital multimeter..

here's the procedure,
Use a philip screw driver to unscrew the cover.once the cover is remove, you can immediately see the power supply board .Powe supply board is where the power cord is connected(make sure to unplug the unit before proceeding)
check the fuses, set the tester to resistance or continuity test.test the fuse you must have a reading of 0000 this means that fuse is good OC means fuse is open.replace the fuse with the same type of amperage it is printed on the fuse...
If the fuse are ok,check for the voltage output of the power board.voltage are as follows,
5 volts DC supply for the mainboard
12volts DC for the audio board
24 volts DC for the screen
when all this voltages are present problem could be on tha mainboard itself and needs a replacement.

If one of the voltages fails then you need to repair the power board check and replace all bulging capacitors and open resistors.you can also replace the whole powerboard It is available online at shoppejimmy.com
good luck and let me know how it goes..

Virea tv has just stopped working. Whilst watching it has switched itself off and there is no standby light or anything. All power cords and supplies are fine but it won't switch back on.

Good day!Follow this D.I.Y procedures to find the exact problem of your TV.
  1. Remove the back cover of your TV.
  2. After that, find the power supply board.
  3. If you already found the power supply,plug-in your TV and power it ON.Check the input voltage of it,using multimeter (AC range). If the power supply have no input voltage the problem could be the power cord.Replace it.
  4. If the power supply have the input voltage, try to test the output voltage if have 5vdc for the system and logic supply,12vdc for the sounds and 24vdc for the back-light inverter.Use your multimeter tester (DC range) to test that.
  5. If the power supply have a voltage outputs such as 5vdc,12vdc and 24vdc and the problem is still there. The problem could be the main board.Replace it with the same type and model # because the main board is no very difficult to fix and its very sensitive.
  6. If the power supply have no output voltage or the voltage is too low, just ignore the step # 5 because the problem is not on the main board, its on the power supply board.
Check the following to fix the power supply board:
  • Fuse: Check the fuse if it is busted or blown.
  • Power transistor (regulator): Check the regulator if it is shorted or leak.
  • Resistor: Check the resistors specially the one that have a low resistance that near the power regulator.
  • Capacitor: Also check the capacitors if it is leak or bulging top.
NOTE: If you found any defective parts or components that mention above replace it with the same value, type and ratings.

I hope this solution will be helpful.Thank you and good luck.

Having trouble turning my Tv on,have to turn it on and off/plug and unplug for a while to get pic and sound. Can you help?

Good day!

The problem of your TV could be the power supply.

Please follow this steps on how to fix that problem
:

  1. Remove the back cover of your TV.
  2. Try to look at the power supply board (it usually directly connected to the power cord)
  3. Plug-in your TV and power it ON to perform a voltage data.
  4. Check the input voltage of the power supply. It should have 110vac or 220vac it depends the input voltage of your TV that comes on the outlet.Use multimeter tester (range in AC)
  5. If the input voltage of the power supply doesn't have a reading, the power cord is defective you need to replace it.
  6. If the input of the power supply have 110vac or 220vac.Please check the output voltage of the power supply using your multimeter tester (range in DC).Normally it should have 5vdc for the system board,12vdc for the audio system and 24vdc for the inverter board (back-light).Also look for the leak/bulged on the top capacitor. If any replace it with the same type, ratings and value.
  7. If the you have done all procedures above and you have found any defects and the output voltage are complete. The problem could be the the system board or main board of your TV.This is not for D.I.Y because the parts are surface mount and its very sensitive. If the problem is main board you have to replaced it,buy a new main board its available at the market.
  8. When the output voltage of the power supply doesn't have reading, please check the following
  • Fuse---look if it is busted
  • Power transistor----If it is shorted (range in diode test)
  • Resistor----If it is open or change value (range in ohms)
If you found any defective parts replaced it with the same type, ratings and value.

I hope this solution will be helpful.Thank you and good luck.

TV won't turn on. Is there a fuse that needs replacing?

Good day!

When the TV is not turning ON it doesn't mean that there's a busted fuse inside although it have a possibility. There are a lot of causes to be considered.Like shorted transistors, leak capacitors open resistors and shorted diode.

Follow this D.I.Y procedures to find the exact problem of your TV.

Sharp dvd player does not come on even on standby although the power supply is on.

Pleasant day!

The problem could be the power supply or the main board.all you have to do is to follow this simple and easy way of troubleshooting.

  1. Remove the cover.
  2. Plug-in your DVD player and power it ON to perform a voltage data/check.
  3. Check the input power of the DVD.Use multimeter tester to test the AC voltage (AC range). It should have 120v or 240vac depends on the requirement of your DVD or the main supply that comes on the outlet. If no voltage reading, your power cord have a continuity problem.Replace it with the same type and A.W.G number standard.
  4. If the power cord got voltage reading.Next is test the output voltage of power supply such as 5vdc for the main board and logic supply using multimeter (DC range). If no voltage reading, the problem could be the power supply board.
Check the following parts which commonly breaks on power supply board.
  • The power transistors (regulators)-It is commonly binds on heat sink and found on the primary of the chopper.use a multimeter (range diode test) to check if it is shorted.
  • The fuse-able resistors-it is the resistor that have low resistance such as 1ohm 2.2 ohms etc.It is usually found near the power regulators/transistors.Use multimeter (range resistance) to check if it is open or change value.
  • The capacitors-it is the one who can store voltage. If you have capacitance meter you can test that,if none just look at the appearance of the capacitor if it is bulge on top or leak.
NOTE: If you found the defective parts that mention above, replace it with the same type and ratings.
When the problem is still there,The problem of the power supply is major and not for D.I.Y.I suggest to send it to the qualified technician or just buy a new one.

5. If the power supply have output voltage. The problem could be the main board and unfortunately the main board is not for D.I.Y because composition of the board is very sensitive. The only way to fix it is to buy a new main board unit.

I hope this solution could fix your problem. Please response if you have any comment and question.Thank you and good luck.
