Kenmore freezer model 23971 -- this is not a refrigerator / freezer, so please don't tell me that the problem is with my ice maker
SOURCE: Kenwood Refrigerator
THE ICE MAKER WILL STOP CYCLING WHEN THE TEMP IN THE FREEZER GETS ABOVE 10 DEGREES. IT HAS A BUILT IN THERMOSTAT THAT TRIPS AT 10 DEGREES.
CHECK THE BACK WALL OF THE FREEZER FOR FROST. IS THERE A FROST BUILDUP ON THE BACK WALL? IF YES,
THERE IS A FAILURE OF THE DEFROST CYCLE.
THREE ITEMS ARE INVOLVED IN THE DEFROST CIRCUIT.
THE CONTROL(TIMER), BI-METAL, AND HEATER. FIND THE CONTROL BEHIND THE TOE PLATE NEAR THE CENTER. THERE IS A KNOB THAT CAN BE TURNED TO ADVANCE THE
TIMER. WHEN IT CLICKS AND SHUTS OFF THE COMPRESSOR AND FAN, IT IS IN DEFROST CYCLE. WAIT FIVE MINUTES AND SEE IF THERE IS ANY SIZZLING OR A RED GLOWING IN THE FREEZER. IF THERE IS, THE TIMER IS BAD. REPLACE IT. IF THERE ISN'T, THE HEATER ASSEMBLY WITH BI-METAL WILL NEED TO BE REPLACED.

hi LOP7,
In most cases you can easily solve this problem.
step one would be to make sure your freezer is getting cold enough. If you have icecream in your freezer is it frozen solid or is it soft. Most icemakers cycle around 0 degrees and if your freezer is not getting to 0 then it will not cycle and it will not make ice.
Step two would be to make sure you icemake is cycling. To do this simply lift the little shut off arm on your icemaker and wait about an hour then go back to the icemaker and drop the arm down. The icemaker should start going through a cycle. You should notice the arm slowly begin to raise and the ice dispencer fingers will begin to turn. Then you will hear it call for water. You may hear a humm.
If the freezer is cold enough and the icemaker is cycling that only leaves the inlet valve. replace the valve and enjoy the ice.
If the freezer is cold enought and the icemaker does not cycle, then you have a bad icemaker. Simply replace the icemaker and viola.
Third if the freezer is not cold enought 0 defrees. Then you may have a defrost problem. In this case post more info and I will be happy to help. Good luck [email protected]

Your condenser where the heat is removed from the refrigeration system may be plugged with dust. The condenser is more than likely located in back of the refrigerator behind a removable panel. Remove the panel and clean it out. Reinstall the panel after you have cleaned the condenser.
Check the back wall of the freezer for frost buildup. If there is frost buildup on the back wall it indicates that there is a problem in the defrost circuit.
Note: The proper term is "More mature individual" , not old.

The most likely problem is in the defrost system. Behind the freezer panel there is not only an evaporator fan, but also the evaporator itself, and a defrost heater, termination bi-metal, and drain pan (or trough). You will likely find ice build-up in the evap coil. This could be caused by the defrost timer, the heater, or the termination bi-metal.
Have a service tech look at the unit.

Look at the back of the freezer wall from inside the freezer. Is there frost on it? If there is, you need to replace one of the components of the defrost system. If there is no frost then you need to have a repair made to the sealed system, it is either out of gas or the compressor is running inefficiently
