You might not have the appropriate software installed on your computer to show / read the files
IE: adobe flash , directx , win zip , codec , word ......
Determine if access is denied by a sharing violation because the folder and its files are in use by someone else or the computer itself. Wait several minutes, and then attempt to access the folder again. Go to the location where the file or its folder are stored on your computer. Lock files are hidden files in Microsoft Windows. Select "Show hidden files." The lock files for Windows applications have a ~ symbol in front of the file name. For example, for test.txt, the lock file is named ~test.txt. In UNIX, the lock file may be identified by an extension of .lock or .swp within in the file name. Delete the lock file. The locked file or folder unlocks. Reboot your computer, and bring it up in Safe Mode. This prevents the startup of many of the system services and programs that could be locking the files or folders. Attempt to access the folder location and its contents. If the folder is available, save the folder or its contents in a directory to which you have access. Record the active processes running on the computer and the programs available in Safe Mode. Then, log into the computer after a normal boot up. Review the applications running in the background in normal setup. One of these applications may be preventing access to the file folder and its contents. If there are applications that run in normal mode that do not run in Safe Mode, turn off those applications. Then, try to access the file folder again. b> Are the Security Permissions for the Folder or Its Contents Preventing Access? b> Check the file folder permissions by right-clicking on the folder and selecting "Properties." In the "Properties" dialog box, select the "Security" tab. The "Name" list box includes the user and group permissions. If there is no "read," "read and execute," or "write" permissions in your user profile, you do not have permission to view the file folder or its contents. These security permissions are typically set by system administrators. System administrators may be trying to prevent end users from altering system files that are critical to the computer running smoothly. Contact your system administrator, and request local administrative rights to the computer. This allows you to gain access to the files and folders that are restricted to administrators. Edit the system policies using administrative tools via the gpedit.msc program. Users can add, read and modify permissions for folders and other objects via this program. Full control is the best system policy, because it includes read, write, execute and modify rights. However, access to the gpedit.msc program may be restricted, as well. Go to the command line (press on the "Windows" and the "R" keys on your keyboard at the same time), and enter the CACLS command for the folder name. Use the command format: C:\> cacls <foldername> /E /G <username>:F CALCS stands for Change the Access Control ListS. This command allows you to add your user name to the security settings to permit access to the protected system folder when the gpedit.msc program is not available. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: What does it mean when my 1TB Iomega external

Hi,

This generally means you have a hardware failure in the drive or enclosure. The simplest way to test which is to have a hardware tech move the drive into a new enclosure and see if it works.

This will void your warranty if you do it, so, if the drive is under warranty and there are no files you consider valuable on the drive, call the manufacturer for warranty support.

If you value the data more than the drive is worth then take it to your local hardware vendor and ask them to test the hard drive in a new enclosure. Good odds it will work this way but if not you may need the help of a data recovery specialist. In North America I use Armor-IT, if you are in a different region and the new enclosure fails to garner results, comment back with your region(Country, State, City) and I will supply you with the closest reputable facility.

SOURCE: cannot copy files to Iomega 500 GB external hard drive.

It depends on how you formatted the the drive.
If it was formatted FAT it will work on both Mac and PC.
If you formatted to HFS+ (the native mac format) then it will only work on a mac.

SOURCE: How come 1tb is equal to 931gb on my new ext. hard drive???

This is due to marketing language. For these people, a KB is 1,000 bytes, not 1,024. Similarly with a MB which is 1,000,000 not 1,048,576.

So when they tell you that your drive is 1TB they mean 1,000 of 'their' gigabytes, which your computer sees as 931 'real' gigabytes.

Theres is probally a problem with the cables you are using. Try using other cables and see if this solves the problem. If not then the hard drive has most likely failed.

Win 7 - open the drive on the computer, click the "organize" drop down menu on the left - go to "folder and search options" - select the second tab (view) - select "show hidden files, folder, and drives" - Hit apply then ok - all of your files should be visible now - select all files by hitting "CTRl" + "A" - right click on one of the files and select properties - uncheck hidden - when/if another window opens select the best option for you - now all your folders should be visible again - you can repeat the first few steps to make your hidden files invisible again if you wish.

I have a WD my book drive. When I try to see the files on the drive they are Not there, But when I click the properties the drive shows half the drive space is used. how do I get the files to show be...

Hi,
It is due to virus activity. Some virus make the contents of the drive hidden, thats why user can't see the files. This can be fixed and data would be available to you. However, there are number of steps involved.
It is suggested that go to FOLDER OPTIONS - and select 'SHOW HIDDEN FILES & FOLDERS' and uncheck/ Deselect 'HIDE PROTECTED SYSTEM FILES'.
creativetech_53.jpg
It would show the hidden files/ folders, if the system not infected Otherwise, from the clean/ virus free system you can see your data and copy all the required files/data. Select the required files and right-click and change the properties of the file by un-checking the hidden attribute. Please note that you can not change the properties (hidden attribute of the files) if the files are marked as system files. To change the attribute of such folders you can download and use iReset.

Also, make sure that you have a good antivirus installed and its updated. Scan your system and clean it.

Let me know if any further clarification/ assistance is required.

Hope it helps! Good Luck! Thanks for using Fixya!
