If your laptop appears to boot up and the hard disk LED flashes, then the problem is probably a back light fault. This can be a faulty inverter or a faulty CCFL lamp. Please click on this link and follow my instructions to identify the fault and possible fix :- http://www.fixya.com/support/r3598095-faulty_laptop_lcd_screen

SOURCE: screen flickers and goes dark u can see the image

There are a couple of Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp tubes behind the screen. They have probably reached the end of life. (If you had no flickering, I would suspect a failed inverter.)

Replacement requires disassembling the display housing, then removing a screw from the side of the display next to where the fat pink and white wires go in. On most displays, you can then slide the tubes and their reflector out of the display by pulling on the wires. Be very careful - the CCFL tubes are long, skinny, and very fragile, and they contain mercury. Tubes usually come bare, with short wire leads at each end. Soldering the old wires onto the new tubes is a delicate task best reserved for experts. Alternatively, you can buy replacement tubes with wires already attached for an extra $8 each. See this tech support link at LCD Parts for more details.

Monitor has power. Will come on very briefly and the go to black screen. Can turn power off and back on and get the same above result. After a 2-3 hour period may come to life...may not.

It appears as if the monitor's back lighting is failing. To test the theory, take a bright flashlight and shine it on the lcd monitor screen when it goes black. If you can see the images that were on the screen before it went dark while shining the flashlight on the screen, then the back lighting is failing. Depending on the monitor, it could have florescent or L.E.D. back lighting, but it's usually more economical to simply replace the monitor with a new better performing monitor, than to attempt repairing the back lighting on the failing monitor.

I have a Dell D600. It starts up to boot page and after 3-5 seconds the picture disappears but the laptop is still running. The indicator light near the power button with a 9 on it stays lit.

I have a similar problem currently. Boot and try pressing Fn+Up arrow repeatedly to raise brightness. Then flick the little button right above your volume control that tells the laptop youve closed it. If you see the screen flicker on/off then its the button. Otherwise reboot and try shining a light at the screen from different angles and see if you can see dark images. If you can see windows boot up but dark, then it is almost certainly your LCDs backlight. If you can't see dark images, next try using the VGA output plug at the back of your laptop to connect to a different monitor. Within less than 1 minute you should see the image on the external screen. If not, try pressing Fn+F8 a few times to toggle the output. If still no picture on the external screen your video card might be fried. If you do get a picture on the external with or without seeing dark images on the laptop, then it is a problem with either the LCD screen, it's inverter, or the screens flex cable. Check Dell support for your systems original parts list HERE. You will need your laptops Service Tag number, which is on a sticker on the bottom of your laptop.

Hope this helps, Good luck.

Samsung 32 lcd tv backlight off after 4 sec. audio ok

If your TV is staying on and you hear audio after the picture goes dark, then you have a problem with a CCFL or the inverter circuitry that drives them.

Most likely an inverter problem.

Like a bad xformer (usually fogged up plastic wrapper)

Or a bad cap (bulged, swollen, cracked)

Or maybe a shorted IC or transistor (test for short circuit between the different pins of the device)

My toshiba screen

Shine a torch light onto the screen. If you can see a faint outline of the images, it could indicate a back light failure. Unfortunately, you cannot fix this by yourself. You will need to take it for servicing.
