My Maytag 5500 made wierd growling noises during the drain cycle, failed to drain, and flashed 'nd'. I was able to manually drain the washer by placing the end of the drain hose in a bowl on the floor and baling until it was finished. That proved that the problem was in the drain pump, rather than a manual obstruction. I also forced a spin cycle to remove some additional water (draining into the bowl again) before opening up the machine. I unplugged the electric, took the four screws off the back access panel of the washer and twisted the pump ccw to remove it. Took the inlet and outlet hoses off--I had put towels down in the bottom of the washer but there was still a lot of water to clean up. Unplugged two sets of cables so I could have the pump free to examine. The impeller was rattling around freely. I pushed the impeller back onto the metal rod, put the whole thing back together, plugged it in and ran the load. Drains like a champ!

When I try to run any cycle the machine turn the pump on and runs until the Nd or not draining code appears. The pump is running and all the water is out, it just doesn't recognize that it is.
