The outer fan of my A/C started rubbing inside the condenser housing because 1 of the 2 screws that hold the condenser to the frame came loose causing it to move. 2 tie wraps later the A/C is much quieter.
I had a similar problem. It sounded like the fan was rubbing against something. After awhile the fan would just stop. I discovered it wasn't the fan but the motor. I ordered the motor from Sears for about $75 including shipping. It was a PITA to replace but now it works fine.
It could be the blower fan is loose and needs to be tightened. If so, and you're handy, shouldn't be too difficult. Depends on the specific design.

Our air conditioner sounded like it exploded the other night. You could hear it down the street! Then, the rattling started, very loud. No cool air coming out. Same air conditioner mentioned here and approx the same age. Any suggestions? No steps have been taken other than to take it out of the window and consider taking it to the curb as we were told its too expensive to fix a window unit. Is it? Thanks!
