Check that the toner you are using is genuine Kyocera, also that the toner hasn't run out, this is normally a toner related issue.
Most machines have a reed switch sensing if the unit is in place.
Remove the developer unit and push it back firmly to ensure it is fitted properly , if this dies not work . Check the sensor / switch , it may be defictive , or not alligned properly .

Thanks - I'd tried all that already and a host of other things. I figure it must just be time to replace the developer unit altogether unless someone else has a brilliant idea
