Originally a picture was frozen, camera wouldn't turn off. Let the charge run out and re-charged, when i turned it on, the Olympus logo froze on the screen and i can't turn it off again. It's new! Only charged four times now, one of those times was due to this issue.
SOURCE: Camera turns on for a few seconds, then off.
A light rap with a knuckle when powering up fixed the problem, at least temporarily. Lens extended, camera works fine. Not exactly a technical fix, but it worked for me.

First: thank you, for suggesting battery terminals. It was failing to power on intermittently for some time; the problem became more-and-more frequent until it would not come on at all. Cleaning the terminals saved my camera! Second: for others, let me suggest plain old pencil erasers as a good way to clean electrical contacts (something I learned from HO model railroads as a kid). A vigorous rub with the brand new eraser on the end of a pencil cleaned the battery contacts inside the camera.

I just started having this problem with my canon PowerShot A310 and checked their service website which says "Effective immediately, and regardless of warranty status, Canon will repair, free of charge, products exhibiting the above-mentioned malfunction if the malfunction is caused by the CCD image sensor. Canon will also cover the cost of shipping and handling in connection with this repair." Here's the website link: http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=PgComSmModDisplayAct&keycode=2112&fcategoryid=221&modelid=9829
