There is most likely a build-up of minerals around the steam holes. Minerals are in ordinary tap water. The coat the heating surfaces, act like an insulator and prevent iron from getting hot. Clean the hot plate with a fine needle or other fine object and then put in a mixture of vinegar and water and let it steam out. To prevent future mineral build-up, use half distilled water and half tap water. If you can't get distilled water, use ordinary drinking water you can buy from your supermarket (it also cheaper). Don't use 'all' distilled water as it boils (steams) at higher temperature and could ruin your iron. Good luck.

It is probably the thermal fuse that has blown. This is mounted on the base of the iron and requires a near total strip of the appliance. It is mounted in series with the element and looks like a metal resistor, inside a fibre glass woven sleeve. Should the thermal fuse prove not to be the problem it could also be the element itself.

Yes, if your electric cord was extremely hot to touch is not common. It's posing danger to your unit and to your entire electrical system that may cause fire. Please let a qualified electrician inspect and repair your unit. The unit thermal fuse may not functioning that automatically switch off or cut the electric power of your unit when it gets too hot. This usually happens for one of a few reasons, Check, Thermal Fuse, Check Element, Check, on/off switch. Check power cable, for continuity.Check Thermostat, Thats all there is inside an iron, Power comes in the Phase, the Black, or Brown wire, then, through the on/off switch, through a Thermal fuse, through the thermostats contacts, to the element, and the other side of the element goes to the Neutral return. usually White or Blue.of course the Earth is Green or Green/Yellow, stripe.and is connected to the metal case..

There are No fuses as per normal, BUT there indeed MAY be a Thermal Fuse, this is a little cylindrical thing about the size of a pencil and about 3/4" long it sometimes is silver and will be wired into the Phase, or "Hot" wire. This will go "Open Circuit" when "Blown". Replace this and you may be all good? You can but check?

There is a thermal fuse in the iron which blows when overheated. This fuse has to be replaced.

You can probably find one on-line at radioshack.com -- match the temperature rating of the old fuse. It'll have to be crimped in -- if you solder it, the heat will blow it.

It sounds to me like the thermal cutoff switch has blown. Irons have these as a safety device similar to a fuse to protect against fire in the event the iron gets too hot. These are not very costly to replace. Here is a link to where you can buy them:

, Make sure you get one of the exact same cutoff point as the one designed for your Iron. If you put in a higher temp device it will be harder to blow but will make the iron dangerous as it may cause a fire if it over heats. Some shady repair men will just bypass this and the iron will work again fine but this is a dangerous practice as it directly puts you of danger. If you do have it repaired at a shop demand for the old thermal cutoff from your unit when you drop it off so the tech will know you know what is wrong with it and that you will check to make sure that it has really been changed. This will also not give him the chance to over charge you when he knows you know it is only a 1 dollar part and easy to change.
This device is very easy to change, If you can open your iron you could easily do this yourself. The part, as you will see on the site where you buy them, only has 2 wires one comming out of each end. You simply cut out the old 1 and replace it with the new one. You do not even have to worry which end goes where. It is like a fuse, it works the same either direction. You have to buy some wire crimp connector to connect it, you can not just solder it in due to the heat in the iron. In a pinch you could just securely twist the ends of the leads with the leads from the old cutoff if you clip the leads from the old cutoff real close to the device. This will leave you with plenty of wire to get a good twist. I always use the crimp connectors so it looks more professional.

The thermal cutoff device blew and must be replaced. It acts like a fuse when the iron gets too hot. Thay are very cheap and it would be well worth replacing. Hope this was helpful.
