I actually just did a lesson on this with my students. When the chemical hand warmer is removed from the outer packet and exposed to oxygen, it produces an exothermic chemical reaction, which is a reaction that gives off heat. The result of this reaction is iron oxide or rust.
It usually consists of iron powder, activated carbon, salt, water, and some type of absorbent material.
Your best bet is to avoid those chemical hand warmers completely. I think your best bet is to pick up a Zippo hand warmer, which lasts for up to 12 hours. It definitely kept me warm on my last hunting trip. Plus, you can refill it with lighter fluid when it runs out.
