The problem is not the cd drive. The disc is bad. There is no recovery partition on that laptop. You will have to order a new recovery disc from HP. No other way to legitimately fix it.

Try cleaning the recovery CD (Windex and a soft cloth seem to do well) and try again. If that doesn't work try another bootable CD. If you still get a boot error, the optical drive may be bad

  • Anonymous Jan 22, 2009

The error is a read error of the drive. So see if you can get access to another bootable CD (Windows XP CD or a bootable cd someone else has made) and see if you get the same error. If the error doesn't change, the problem is with the CD Drive, not the CD you are trying to boot from.

Computer cannot access hp v165w

Sounds like you corrupted the MFT (master file table) on the flash drive. Format the flash drive and start over. You could also try something like GetDataBack after you flash the drive to recovery your data.

How to set HP Pavilion ze4400 to factory setting

You can try one of the solutions to see if this helps your issue:
HP Recovery Manager can be accessed from the Start Menu, or by tapping F11 key as soon as you power on the laptop. Recovery Manager is used to reinstall back to factory specs_also used to make a Recovery Disk set.

1781 - disk failure problem startup for HP nc 6220

This happens if the harddisk data is corrupted.
Hard disk has a data that the computer reads first before going to the operating system. To fix this to to do a debug or do a full format of the hard drive. Try to run a diagnostics first by pressing the F9 upon the HP logo. if it does not report any error run a recovery by pressing the F11 upon the HP logo then choose the SYSTEM RECOVERY. then simply follow the prompts to revive your computer to the original factory default. Do this a couple of times. If this will not work then most likely the recovery partition is deleted or corrupted. If you can still see the HP RECOVERY IMAGE, then go to START > COMPUTER / MY COMPUTER > right click and choose MANAGE > DISK MANAGEMENT > look for the HP RECOVERY IMAGE > right click and choose > SET AS ACTIVE PARTITION, then reboot the computer then simply follow the steps for the recovery.

    Hi, I have a Toshiba 80GB MK8037GSX 2.5" SATA in

    1) have checked bios cannot see hdd mounted.

That is BAD -- the disk-drive could have "died".

    2) tried a seagate hdd works fine so connections in laptop seem to be working

That shows that your motherboard is GOOD, but that your disk-drive is BAD.

    3) can hear hardrive trying to do something as can hear harddrive usual noise, continous noise for about 5 sec before getting the error message

That is BAD -- the disk-drive is "dying".

    4) no rattling or crackling noise from drive apart from the above

That is BAD -- none of the files can be read from your disk.

i have created a ubuntu boot up disk which allows me to access laptop but does shows error when locating hdd,

    That is BAD.

once in ubuntu i can access internet but it does not show the windows partition of the harddrive, only shows ubuntu as opearing system, confused.

That is BAD. Only the CD/DVD disk has been mounted -- Ubuntu could not mount the disk-drive.

In regards to ubuntu working does this mean the hdd is ok?

No, it means that your motherboard is working.

and is there anyhting i can try via ubuntu to locate the files?

    No. The disk-drive is "dead".

There exist commercial "data recovery" services that can try to repair your device, just long-enough to rescue and copy your files. For example, see: https://services.seagate.com/index.aspx?lng=en-US for a "no data - no charge" guarantee.

Put in new harddrive, but the recovery disk gives me error message 105.

If your "new" hard drive is really brand new from the factory, it needs to be partitioned and formatted before it will accept any software, even from a recovery disk. You can do that either with a slave cable via usb port using the "computer" "manage" function on a working computer, or use a boot CD to partition and format the drive on the computer getting the new drive. Then boot using the recovery disk and follow on-screen instructions.

Drive manufacturers save money by not preparing the drive, but it forces a user to know how to prepare it. Hence your difficulty getting the recovery disk to work. Just partition and format and you'll be ready to "recover".
