This is often caused by a problem with the speakers or speaker wiring. A speaker wire that's pinched behind the head unit will cause this problem if it's shorted to dash metal or the deck chassis. The first thing to do is remove the head unit and inspect all the speaker wiring for bare spots or pinched spots. If everything looks okay, disconnect all four speakers from the deck and switch it on. If it still shows "protect" then you have a defective head unit. If not, then turn it off, re-connect one of the speakers, and turn it on again. Continue until you find the speaker output that puts the deck into protect mode.

I have a KDC-MP4032 and it randomly will go into protect mode I am not currently using the internal amp? I am using all three RCA cable outputs into my Alpine amps. It would seem that if I had a wiring issue it would trigger the protect circuit in my amps? Is it possible for a short to carry back to the head unit?
The word protect keeps flashing
