The Assos company makes great cycling leg warmers that can be put before shorts and if pulled up high enough they won't slide down. They can be used for a very long time before needing to be substituted.

Arm and Leg warmers usually come in pairs so unless you want more than one pair you can just buy one set. If you are in a store, though, you might as well ask the shop assistant and make sure you will bring home a pair rather than a single one.

Yes. It is not what they are meant for and it will look a bit odd, but you definitely can do it if you like it.
If it helps, you can also make little holes for your thombs so that it will look a bit more like an arm warmer.

Get wool ones, but make sure that they are knitted very tightly so no air can penetrate through holes. Also I'd use fleece ones, I think fleece is the best to keep you warm in extreme weather
