Tomtoms store data in a non volatile format, either to an SD card, Flash memory or to a hard drive, none of the above require a battery backup.
If the battery is removed the only data that should be lost is the time and date

Down load data from Tom Tom 910

Yes but as a member of the public you will not have the appropriate software or equipment.
Your insurance company will help especially if it helps their claim or the Police will assist you gathering evidence for a prosecution.
Info gained will be speed, time (set by sat gps receiver) not what time you say it is and exact location with 3 square metres and direction of travel.
Hope this helps with your question.

I owe a tomtom 910 which will not hold its charge

How old is the battery? Rechargeable batteries usually last 3 to 5 years before they start losing their ability to give normal power and voltage. If it is 3 years or more, it is suspect to be at fault; if 5 or more, most likely a new battery fixes the problem.
If the tomtom is at fault, you are most likely out of warrantee time, however, most people never contact the manufacture when there is a problem (even if it is in-warrantee). I suggest you contact manuf. and do not take no for an answer. Be a pest to them about your problem and tell them you will berate them and crucify their product on the internet. Send them the unit (afterall , if it is bad, you have nothing to lose), let them deal with figuring out how to get you off their backs. It usually works very well-----they'll send you a new one just to shut you up. Goodluck, Macgivor

TomTom Go 910 comes on, then goes off

Sounds like a dying battery. There is not enough charge being maintained in the battery to complete the loading of the data. ChaNGE THE BATTERY

Yes you can buy a new card with all the map data on it. You can also search the internet for a program to "unformat SD card" only if you didn't write any new information onto the formatted SD card
