Jen-Air Refrigerator does not cool ---freezer works

The freezer seems to "freeze up". When I turned the unit off for 24 hours the water tray was full. It has to be emptied twice. Why is the unit freezing up? Thanks for your help, Robert
Jen-Air side by side model JRSD2298

You have a defrost problem, most common problem component for the jen air refrigerators is the defrost control board pt#61005988. until you change the board you will need to defrost your refrig  manually about once a week. the board is located in the control housing in the refrig compartment and is fairly easy to replace yourself.

Whirlpool S20b American style f/f. The fridge is very cold and some foods are freezing.

Suggest lowering the refrigerator set point to a lower number such as 3. There is usually an indication of normal setting on the adjustments. Wait 24 hours and check the refrigerator compartment again. Use a thermometer to record the temperatures. The meat compartment will be normal just below freezing. If no success then read the following.

One reason that this occurs is that the unit is working near continuously to reach the freezer temperature. Another words the unit is not capable or cooling the freezer to the prescribed temperature. The result is the excess cooling eventually reaches the refrigerator section causing the refrigerator to freeze. The unit will if this is the case run nearly continuously. This situation is counter intuitive. Freezer not reaching set point, excessive cooling over cools refrigerator therefore refrigerator freezes.

The cause is either the freezer door/seal is not closing or sealing the freezer compartment or the compressor or defrost cycle is not functioning properly.

Check the freezer door seal using a strip of paper. Check to see if air is flowing from the vents in the freezer. Using a thermometer check the temperature of the freezer. Listen for and record if the compressor is running or not.

The normal freezer temperature is around '0' Fahrenheit. If no or little air is flowing from freezer air vents look for ice on the back wall. If ice is present it is likely the auto defrost cycle is not working. Attempt to defrost by hand which requires several hours with everything removed.

Check that lint and dust has not blocked the coils under the unit and that the lower fan is running. Usually warm air exits from the machine grill in the front. Remove the grill and check for air flow and debris buildup. Vacuum if necessary.

And unfortunately if the compressor runs continuously and no air blockage underneath would indicate that the cooling capacity is reduced requiring a major service or replacement.

Hope this helps?

First refrigerator stopped cooling, next freezer. Seemed like it was trying to defrost but their was lots of ice built up on coils. Jen-Air side by side, counter depth model number JCB2388ARB.

Causes of ice build up on coils:
Not enough freon (leak). Coil defrost heater not working (Coils on all freezers freeze up, but you should not notice). Coil defrost timer not working. Compressor thermostat not working (or end fell out of proper location).
:o).

Left door open, closed next day, but only blowing cool air now

You will need to turn the unit off and let it completely unthaw. There is frost that builds up in the ducts and behind the panels when the door is left open that will cause the unit to not cool or circulate where needed.

Freezer working but not colder enough to freeze.

It will usually take 24 hours for the fridge/freezer to adjust fully to the temperature settings.

It is also possible that the defrost timer cycle was going into or just coming out of the defrost cycle, thus it could have delayed the start of the cooling cycle, so give it a little time to determine if the freezer is working.

If, not freezing after 24 hours, let us know and we'll go from there.

It takes longer for an empty freezer to get and hold temperatures, so it is always a good idea to have the freezer loaded with bread (thirft store bargains are cheap) or jugs of 3/4 full water (water takes longer to freeze than bread thou).

Hope you find this very helpful and best regards!

Ice maker doesn't make enough ice to supply two senior citizens. This is the 2nd refrigerator we have had installed this month. What can we do to increase the amount of ice it puts out. The ice bin has...

Found in the FAQ section on Samsung.com:
Samsung refrigerator freezers produce about 120 cubes per day, which is in line with most manufacturer specifications.
Empty the ice tray and let the unit run for 24 hours.
If fewer than 50 cubes are produced during the 24-hour test, then your refrigerator requires service. Please contact Samsung Service at 1-800-SAMSUNG to schedule a service appointment.
If your freezer is producing 50 to 90 cubes per day, try the following:
  • Set the freezer temperature display to a lower setting. Freezer temperature must be 5 degrees Fahrenheit or less for the ice maker to work properly.
  • Make sure that the water valve on the refrigerator water supply line is completely open. You can find the water valve where the refrigerator water supply line taps into your house water line.
  • If you have a water filter in your refrigerator, change the filter cartridge. For instructions, see your Users Manual.
If you want your freezer to produce more than 120 ice cubes in a day, try the following:
  • An ice maker typically makes 1 tray of ice every 90 minutes. To shorten the amount of time the freezer takes to produce a tray of ice, set the freezer temperature display to a lower setting.
  • If your refrigerator has a Power Freeze function, press the Power Freeze button to speed up the ice making process. In the Power Freeze mode, both the compressor and the freezer fan run for 10 hours continuously. The ice making interval is reduced from 90 minutes to 55 minutes. If the ice bucket fills in less than 10 hours, Power Freeze stops automatically.
NOTE: If you have just installed your refrigerator, it will take 6 to 12 hours for the refrigerator to produce ice.
You should throw away the first three batches of ice cubes that the ice maker produces (approximately 30 cubes) to ensure the ice maker is making ice from clean water.
