When I try and sew the thread of my bobbin becomes tangled and the needle stops. I end up with a large tangle of thread

Sometimes with thick fabric you forget to drop the presser foot. Make sure you are doing that.

Are you using heavy thread for the top stitching? If so you will need to tighten the top tension. You would think if it is thicker thread that you would need to loosen the top tension but you have to tighten it to help pull it up through the fabric. If you use heavy thread in the bobbin you would have to loosen the bobbin tension. Check and make sure the thread is seated in the top tension and make sure there is no lint in the tension disc. It is definitely a tension issue. Hope this helps.

Hello
Possibly your bobbin is in the machine backwards or upside down. The thread needs to come off the bobbin in a certain way (or direction) specific to each machine. If it will fit, try flipping the bobbin over or around.
Another thing might be the thread tension, make sure you have threaded the feed from the spool of thread properly. Often it will do this on its own.
If the bobbin is in correctly and through the **** in the side of the bobbin casing, make sure the top is threaded correctly. The part the goes up and down, I don't know the name, but it is right above the needle and if the thread is not through this part you will get a mess on the underside.
change the needle
make sure the thread has not come off of the thread take up lever
rethread the machine top & bobbin,, make sure to use every
thread guide
make sure to not over fill the bobbin,, make sure the bobbin is not
warped or damaged
