Opening the MX-500 Remote Control

I spilled a drink on the MX-500 and need to get into it in order to clean the circuit board. I don't see any way to get it open. Can anyone help? Thanks!

I have the same problem; can't get into it to fix the light. I have not found any screws and trying to pry it open has not gone so well.

Use a small flat blade (screwdriver, or whatever) and pry around the light button. The bottom connects over the top so try to guide the blade in the crack then down and out. If you get an slight opening, stick a another small blade in to hold it while you continue to pry. It make take a fair amout of force to get the bottom part, start with the top.

You will need to prise it open. I used a small strong knife and worked it between the two halves of the remote. Once you have done it once it becomes easy.

This remote may have a screw under the label on the rear if not it is a 'snap together' type which usually can be prised open using a very thin screwdriver but be careful you dont slip and injure yourself.

My remote got wet and doesn't work

Buy a new one, or if you can open it, you could try to clean the printed circuit board and the rubber part, where the buttons are on. If it was normal water, drying it and cleaning both sides, with a dry cloth, even if everything is already dry, should be enough. If something like sugar was in it (spilled some soda drink) please first try you get of the sugar, with clean water from everything. (When it is open) and dry it carefully, Check all contacts are clean and nothing is on it. The black parts under the buttons, should stay on there, because the resistance is needed to make the contact on the circuit board.
Perhaps you can find how to open your remote, on ifixit dot com.

How to repair a Remote Control that is not working properly

When you have a remote control that is not working properly---works but some buttons either do or do not work correctly the most common cause for this is something got spilled on the front of the remote--it does not have to be a large amount to cause problems.

The way all infrared remotes work is there is a circuit board inside with black carbon lines etched on it---this includes lines for each function the remote has.

The buttons on the outside of the remote are actually one large rubber like mat and on the bottom side are coated black buttons---when you press a button on the keyboard the button part on the bottom of the mat touches lines on the circuit board and directs the remote to send a infrared signal to the unit it controls.

In this situation you have two choices:

1.) Most remotes can be taken apart and cleaned for this problem--I have done hundreds of them.

a) Once you get the remote apart (the hard part) the rubber mat should lift freely off of the circuit board---if you have to peel it off and feel resistance you will see whatever residue of what was spilled and got under it; it gets between the mat and the circuit board.

b) The surface of the board where the lines are can be cleaned with denatured alcohol.

c) To clean the mat: remove it completely and with a small toothbrush and dish soap gently wash it in the sink with warm water. Then dry it with compressed air or a hairdryer set to air only. When it is COMPLETELY dry put it back into the face of the remote.

d) If there was a spill into the remote it is also a good idea to clean the face of the remote where the buttons protrude and dry it completely before you put the mat back.

e) Put the remote back together and see if it now works.

Your second option is to borrow another remote for the same kind of unit and see it works normally--if it does and cleaning does not fix the original remote--YOU WILL NEED to buy a new original remote for the unit.

I stay away from "Universal" remotes as many either will not work or be missing several features the original one had.

If a KNOWN good remote does not work it is possible but very unlikely that the problem is in the unit the remote conrols.

See attached photo
of a typical remote taken apart--note the lines on the board and the bottom of the buttons on the keypad.

Neverclean the bottom of the buttons with anything except soap and water asany chemicals can damage the black conductive coating on the bottom ofeach button--it will not hurt the lines on the circuit board!

Infrared on all the time sony remote

Hi Robert,
Most of these remotes are carbon pattern type closed switches. If you cleaned the PCB with other than a real pure solution like rubbing alcohol the pad may still be shorted continuously. The real problem is that if the button were sticking that usually mean there was a contaminant inside the remote which could be a drink or other spill. All that needs to be cleaned out. I use denatured alcohol but I do not scrub the carbon traces as they can be removed if not careful. A light cleaning with Windex might help as drinks are water based not alcohol based. I could take a look at the remote if you want. I repaired a number of them when I was Sony authorized and working at other places as a Chief Engineer. People seem to bring me things to repair- it is still going on but most cassette decks and Open Reel decks now.
E mail me at [email protected] if you need help.

My daughters's calculator got wet when something spilled in her book bag. We took out the batteries and let it dry out. Later we put in new batteries and it works but is extremely slow and I have to press...

If water was spilled in it, the batteries should have been removed immediately, if you could remove the circuit board from the casing, dry it off and place it under a lamp for a few hours it should have been perfectly fine. If a soft drink, sugar base or other substance was spilled in it; the board would need to be cleaned, a small amount of soap and water can work, use a cotton swab, only clean the affected area of the spill, make sure to rinse all the soap off, dry with towel, then place under a lamp to get all the moisture out. Also make sure you clean the bottom side of the buttons that contact the circuit board. If it doesn't work then you may have to buy another unit.

Tv codes for universal remote

If you have a learning universal remote, such as the MX-500, just put the remote in learning mode, press the button on the universal remote you want to program then press the appropriate button on the other remote. Otherwise, we'll need to know also what remote control you have. They are not all alike.

Where can I order (on line) a battery for the MX 3000 remote?

I had several batteries that I ordered and they have been all purchased. Since I make no money on the batteries and can only order in bulk I will only order them if I can round up over 50 customers who need MX-3000 batteries. If you need one, please go to www.totalcontrolremotes.com and get in touch with us by putting "MX-3000 battery needed" and we will add you to the list. Either way wil let you know by mid-March 09 if and when the order will be placed for additional batteries.
