Closed Captioning on HD channels

A weird problem has surfaced with my 48wp30. For some reason, the closed captioning has turned itself on, but only for the HD channels. It remains off for all other stations. I have used the televisions menu settings to ensure that closed captioning is off, but it appears to have always been so. Yet closed captioning appears, as I mentioned, on the HD channels nonetheless. I get my HD channels through a PVR supplied by our local cable company. After calling them, they said that closed captioning is not a cable function, just a television one. I must admit that I am stumped. Any ideas?

Thank you so much - we have recently changed TV's and the intermittant closed captioning continued. Before calling Millinium (cable provider) we checked here to see if there was a solution.

Thank you for the good advice - no longer have unwanted closed caption - and we now know how to turn it on when we do need it.

We had the exact same problem just yesterday when we bought our Sony 46" Bravia LCD. Nobody, neither Comcast Cable or Sony seemed to really know how to get rid of the closed caption at first and we did have a Motorola box - the box is the problem, not the tv. Here is step-by-step instructions that worked for us. 1. While TV is on, power DCT (Digital Cable Terminal) off 2. Press and hold "menu" button on digital terminal (the screen below will appear) 3. Using Up/Down cursors, highlight "Close Caption" 4. Using Left/Right cursors, put - Close Caption: Disabled 5. Press "ok-select" 6. When done, press "power" to exit menu 7. Press "power" again to turn DCT on If you go through these steps slowly, you should have a caption-free screen!

The bad thing is, every time we want to activate or deactivate the CC, we have to go through these steps, it is a pain.

Is this a motorola box? If so, turn box off (leave tv on) press menu button, the CC options are in this menu, just turn box on or press menu again when done. Hope this helps, if not what type of box, check your menu/settings on your box, most will handle converting the digital captions.

Samsung LN-T4061F

To view the captions, all you have to do is turn on the decoder by following these simple steps:
  1. Access your TV menu screen using your remote or by pressing a button on the face of the TV.
  2. Select the closed captions heading. Several different caption options may appear.
  3. Select the "CC1" option.
  4. Exit the menu.
Closed captions should appear within approximately one minute of adjusting this setting. If they do not, review this portion of your television's operating manual or contact the manufacturer of the television set.

Turning on closed captioning

If you have a cable box or a satellite receiver you will set up closed captioning on it. For most cable boxes you have to turn off the power and immediately press the menu button on the front or them. Then the hidden menu appears if you've pressed the menu button on the cable box itself and not on its remote soon enough. Then you scroll down to closed captioning and enable it. Turn the cable box back on to view your channels with closed captioning.

If you have satellite tv you can press one of the colored buttons on the remote to get to a menu that will allow you to enable closed captioning.

How do I get closed captioning on a Samsung TV model TXJ2754?

Hello

Your TV displays the closed captions that are broadcast with some

television shows. These captions are usually subtitles for the hearing

impaired or language translations. All VCRs record the closed caption

signal and most pre-recorded commercial video tapes provide closed

captions. Check for the closed caption symbol in your television

schedule and on the tape's packaging: .

1 Press MENU repeatedly until you see the Setup menu. Press CH
to select "Caption."

2 Press VOL+ to open the Closed Caption menu.

3 Press VOL + to turn closed captioning on.

Misspellings and odd characters can occur in captioning. Also, there may be a

captioning delay after changing channels. Neither situation is a TV malfunction.

4 Press CH to highlight "Mode." Press - VOL or VOL + to choose

"Capt." (captions) or "Text." In caption mode, captions appear and

cover a small portion of the picture. In text mode, information unrelated

to the program, such as news reports, are displayed and
often cover a large portion of the screen.

5 If you wish, use CH , CH , or VOL + to change the captioning

channel or field. Then, press DISPLAY to return to normal viewing.

Different channels and fields display different information, such as additional
languages or supplemental information

Can't turn on closed captioning and subtitles

If it's only with some DVDs, then the problem likely lies in the DVD itself not containing any subtitles or CC.

Somehow you have turned on closed captioning in TEXT mode. Navigate the setup menus to find the closed captioning options and turn it off.

That should resolve the problem.

Black square image on screen

meknow is right I think. To turn off your closed captioning hopefully all you need to do is get into the setup menu. You didn't list what kind of TV you have so this is a generic solution. Go into menu and in a setup menu there will be a closed captioning way to select to turn the box off.
The reason sometimes you see it and sometimes you don't is because some programs have closed cationing and some don't.
And because you are only seeing a blank box and not closed captioning is because there are different closed captioning standards. CC1, CC2, etc.
So if you can find the menu item that allows you to turn off the closed captioning, it would be a good start to solving your problem.

Access the TV's menu by pressing the "menu" button on the remote. Look for "Captioning" or if not on the screen try "set-up" or "audio" all the while looking for "CC", "Caption" or "Closed Caption".
When you find it, turn it off.
