My Kenmore washing machine Model 110.92581200 My agitator doesn't work during the agitate cycle. The basket spins during the spin cycle. The water level and timer controls continue to work correctly. The agitator dogs are OK. I understand that there is a motor ""gear"" that should connect and start the agitator. How do I find and identify this and check if that's the problem. Is there anything else I should check?
Well, it sounds like you've done your homework. My first suspect would have been the agitator dogs too, but you said they were fine. Another likely suspect would have been the motor coupler, but you said the washer spins during the spin cycle. If the coupler was bad the unit would fill, but wouldn't agitate or spin. Plus, it would make an awful noise. I would have also suspected a clutch assembly, but you said the wash tub can spin. Normally, when the clutch goes bad, the drum won't spin, or spins slow. Another suspect could have been a bad lid switch, but the washer would have filled and stopped, without agitating or spinning. The only remaining suspect that I'm aware of is the gear case (transmission). Checking under the washer can give you some clues. Normally, when a gear case starts to go bad, they leak an amber colored oil. You may find puddles or drips under the washer. If you see no signs of oil the gear case could still be defective, however. But, before you go through all the trouble, double check the agitator one more time. Completely remove it from the tub and check the under side to ensure the grooves that grip the top of the gear case shaft have not been worn smooth. I hope this may have been some help to you.
The gear case is a likely suspect, but you may have a basket drive causing you problems too. The basket drive is what the gear case shaft inserts into under the agitator. It can be a real bear to replace, however. I don't have an easy solution as far as how to prove the gear case, or the basket drive, because they both can exhibit the same symptoms. In some circumstances replacing both may be required. If you go the route of replacing the basket drive you should also replace the upper and lower drum seals (one fits in the agitator shaft and one fits under the basket) along with a spanner nut (which holds the inner basket in place under the agitator). The reason being that these components can be damaged while trying to remove the basket drive. The gear case is generally a simple matter of removing the water pump, drive motor, agitator and four bolts and it drops out from the bottom of the machine. It's less work, but may be more expensive. So...I don't have an easy fix for you. Drive problems are usually a maintenance intensive endeavor. I hope this helps some.

Sounds like the spin coil/brake solenoid is burnt out or broken. This is a coil situated on the motor plate under the machine with a lever attatched to it. When the machine goes into spin cycle, this solenoid pulls the brake away from the outer drum to allow the drum and agitator to spin together. The shaft that goes into this coil should move in and out freely. If tight, replace spin coil/brake solenoid.

I checked the agitator and the grooves are fine. I did not see any oil under gear case but feel that it's the only part left that makes the agitator work. Do I just replace the gear case or is there another way to check if that's the problem.

I sure can't say what fixed my washer, but after trying and probing from all the great suggestions it just started to agitate again. I'm sure there is still a problem but for now I have a working machine.
