I was using my desktop PC (Windows XP) and the internet today with no problem, and then suddenly I had no connection. I have DSL service, and a 2wire modem which is working fine and all lights are showing green. In fact, my mac laptop is wirelessly connected to the modem, and it still has an internet connection. Please note, the desktop is hardwired to the 2wire modem.
To troubleshoot the PC, I went to Control Panel to Network Connections where two options were displayed: 1) Dial-up - which was listed as disconnected, firewalled, standard modem. 2) LAN or High Speed Internet - Hamachi which was listed as connected, firewalled, Hamachi Network Interface.
Then via Control Panel, System, Hardware to Device Manager, I looked at Network Adaptor which has two sublistings: 1) this one had an icon of a yellow circle with a black "!" next to Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx Gigabit Controller. 2) Hamachi Network Interface.
AT&T Tech Support could not offer support but did say they believed it was a network adaptor issue.
If anyone could help me resolve this issue and re-establish a connection I would really appreciate it. Thank you
Go to Control Panel, System, Hardware to Device Manager, and unistall broadcom netxtream gigabit controller, and restart your computer after restart broadcom netxtream gigabit controller will install automatically. once intallation finish, check your internet is getting in your PC

Decided to bite the bullet, commenced second rebuild with Emachine recovery disk only, Solved the problem. Also required sp3 before it ran well. Good thing this was for a relative.
Most desktops need to be connected with a wire to your network because most desktop computers do not come with a wireless NIC (network interface card). If you are not sure if yours has one you can get your service tag off of your computer and type it in the Dell website (link below) under drivers and downloads and look at the original configuration for your system. If you have a Wireless NIC card in your desktop it should connect just like your laptop computers did. If not you may have a defective wireless card.
Your machine was difficult to track down. As far as I can tell, the 5260 is the Intel motherboard. Below is a link to a page where you can individually download the drivers you require. Best of luck! Greg

Official support has gone by the wayside for Windows XP. If you have a working internet connection on the computer you should be able to update most things with Windows Update. If you are having trouble getting a specific driver you can download it directly from the link below.
If you are having trouble getting an internet connection on the machine, consider downloading the "Network Drivers" and move them to the computer using a USB Flash Drive.

If you have a internet connection and can not display the web page. you might have a browser issue
