Wow... I'm not sure how I got to the initialize section... I don't have a manual and I found it by accident. Whatever it was, it worked! Thank you. Hit the lightening bolt on the pad then decide on one and hit the "ok" button. If this doesn't help then look for the manual (google search Nikon Coolpix s3500 manual) Hope I helped :)
Hi,
The icon for the flash on a camera is a lightening bolt, you press the button with the lightening bolt and it will give you option to have it on or off.
The flash in a camera is represented by a symbol like that of a 'lightening bolt' If you have a cross sign over that symbol, it means that the flash is turned off. Change the setting of the camera to make it only the 'lightening bolt'. Then it would flash when you take a picture.
Two possible causes:
1. Your battery is weak.
2. You have the flash turned off. Press the button with a picture of a lightning bolt and watch the screen to see if it changes. Stop when you see the bolt and an "a".
We looked at your online manual and figued out that it was a formatting error. Then went through the steps to fix the problem. Camera working fine now.
It sounds like you need a new battery. When batteries start to fail the flash tends to stop working. You can get a battery at www.needbattery.com
They guarantee thier batteries for a year and they are 1 of the cheapest stores for batteries you can find on or off the net. Hope this helps.

This camera has four flash modes and each time you press the button the mode changes. As you press the button you should see the indictor in the upper left side of the screen. 1.In automatic flash, the camera will decide if you need flash or not. This mode does not have any indicator on the screen 2.Forced flash, this will cause the flash to be constantly on. The indicator looks (kind of) like a lightning bolt. 3.Slow Syncro, this mode slightly delays the flash and is used to lighten up the background more the foreground. The indicator looks like the lightning bolt with SL next to it. 4.No flash, this will turn off the flash. The indicator looks like a lightning bolt enclosed by a circle with a diagonal line through the lightning bolt. (similar to a no parking sign).
If you don’t see the indictor changing on the screen the switch behind the button is malfunctioning.
what u have to do is when u are going to take the picture click on the little lightening bolt next to the func. set button. 2 pictures will pop up- one of a lightening bolt and another with a lightening bolt with a slash through it. hit the lightening bolt button again and it will select the slashed lightening bolt picture. this will turn flash off to turn it back on go back to the screen with the 2 bolts the same way but press the button with the flower to the right of the func. set button.
