There is a burning smell coming from the drum. The lint screen and dryer duct are clean. The smell is present with or without the lint screen and clothes in the drum. I took the front panel off to locate the smell. It only appears to be in the drum, not the lower section with the heating unit, although the air/smell would flow from the heating unit into the drum and not out the front opening. The inside of the dryer unit (around the heating unit) was very dusty, but there was no obvious dirt on the heating coils. The dryer is 14 years old, but works great except for the new smell.
Some item may have gotten between the drum that rotates and the housing and during the rolling of the drum this item may be heating up from the friction. Check closely to see if you can find anything rubbing on the drum.
The felt gaskets on the front and the back of the drum look good. I couldn't find anything that might be between the drum and the housing. I did notice that the drum belt is shredding and hanging on by less than 1/8" think in some parts. I took the thermostat and the heater out and checked the continuity. Heater was fine. The thermostat was fine at room temp but only turned off at 270 when it's rated at 200 degrees. Would the belt or the thermostat be the problem? I going to put it back together and check the air flow. the vent is clear, but I want to see if the blower is working well enough. need to do it tonight while it's still 5 degrees, supposed to be -8 degrees F. tomorrow morning.
the air flow coming out of the exhaust was good. Also, I didn't notice the burning smell as much outside at the exhaust.
I would think the belt would be the problem here. When you said it was coming from inside the drum I did not think it was the belt. But since you smell it in the house and not outside that tells me it really is not in the drum. It is very likely the belt is slipping and heating up. It sounds like you are needing a new belt regardless. I would do that first.
Thanks Vince, I think I found the smell when I took the dryer apart to inspect between the drum and the housing. One of the blue tumbler bearing kits in the front is worn all the way thru. It looks partly melted. I order the part, hope it works.
It sounds like you kept looking until you found it. Since the drum was not turning with the ease it should have that may be what has shredded the belt also. I would suggest while you have everything torn apart you go ahead and replace that belt. Good luck!

I had the same problem last month. My heater element broke in two places. This created an electrical open that prevented the heater from functioning. I replaced the heater element and my problem was solved.
In order to check your heater element: With the machine unplugged, disconnect one wire to the heater element and then use an ohm meter or multimeter across the heater element lugs to read resistance. Infinite ohms = open circuit.
take of screws holding door on, and screws opposite door hinges. the front will know be able to take off. just unplug first.

Go out and buy you a duct cleaner. It looks like a dome shaped broom. Clean your duct from the outside and if you can from the inside. Also if you use fabric softener sheets, clean your lint filter with soap and water periodically (every 3 months would be optimal) to remove the clear residue the dryer sheets can leave behind.
Good Luck!

The problem is the dryer coils are failing. They tend to fail as they heat up. These are inexpensive and easy to replace.
There is a video at www.appliancehelponline.com/servicemanual.html this will walk you thru the troubleshooting of these components. It may be a different model but the troubleshooting will be the same. You can also enter your model # for diagrams and illustrations. Not all models are available. If you need help disassembling your machine there are videos of this also for most styles.

Check for lint buildup on the "Hi Limit Themostat" located above the heating element.
There is a thermostat kit that you can get and replace all three at once. This will make sure your dryer runs safe and up to its required operational limits. The lint buildup may cause the thermostats to get out of the tolerance. Here is a link to the thermostat kit.
