GE refrigerator not cold but Freezer works fine

I have a GE TBX18JATJRWH (not sure how old) top mount freezer and the refrigerator section just died on me. The freezer works fine. I checked the front and it was full of dust, which I have cleaned. I checked the rear and the condensor fan is running. I don't see any vents blocked in the freezer (although I didn't open it up). And also I do see a little condensation in the refrigerator on the inside rear near the frige and freezer settings (which are up all the way). Please help

I had the same problem on my side by side GE Fridge/Freezer & it was the defrost heating element. Part was $50 & that fixed my problem.

You need to find out if the evaporator fan in the freezer is working. or if the evaporator is all iced up. If the fan is not working you will need to replace it. If the coils are all iced up you have a defrost problem and that will ned to be resolved. Once a evaporator is all iced over air can not pass through it and you will loose your cooling in the refrigerator first. Check the heater and the terminator to make sure they are good. You can use a hair dryer to clear the ice off the evaporator. Once you find the bad part replace it and the unit will function normally

I do know that if you place your freezer thermostat at mid temp and not wide open it will help your fridge get colder. The freezer thermostat being maxed out will only rob your icebox of cold air. so try lowering your freezer temp and putting your frig thermostat on max. allow 24 hrs for the change..

I have a GE side by side and had the same problem. Upon removing the inside cover I found that there was a substantial amount of ice on the evaporator. Melting with a hair dryer was the short term fix. I have been told, by a reputable appliance repair man, that this is common for GE refrigerators and that the cause is usually a bad defroster heating element. Fortunately you can replace this yourself for about $40.

Have ge gt mdl# gts22jbpbrww. the freezer is cold but the refrig is not getting cold. I took apart the cover showing me the freezer fan and it is not working could this be why the refrig is not getting...

Yes, if the fan is not forcing the cold air from the freezer section to the refrigerator section, then it will be warmer than it should be. Also check to make sure that the cooling tubes aren't blocked with frost/ice. If you put a hair dryer to the cooling tube openings you should feel the air flow on the other side.

GE model 25 - 6 years old - Top part of fridge and freezer not cooling. compressor seems to be working fine. Bottom part of freezer is very cold and bottom part of fridge is freezing everything. Appears to...

It sounds like the damper assembly might have failed or be stuck open. The damper is mounted in the left side upper rear corner of the refrigerator section. The damper controls the amount of cold air that comes into the refrigerator section from the freezer.

If you want to repair the refrigerator yourself you should disconnect the power to the refrigerator and remove the 2 screws holding the damper cover to the center wall. Sometimes you can spray the damper with WD40 and free it up.

Fridge section is working fine but the freezer is not getting quite cold enough.

Good day,
You didn't say how long this has been an issue. That would help.
First check to see if you can hear the fan in the freezer compartment running when the machine is on. It's easy to tell, if you open the freezer door. As well. see if there is any frost building up on the rear panel in freezer compartment. If so, then it is not defrosting automatically, and could be a defective timer or defrost thermostat and heater located in the freezer section behind the rear panel.

If that's all good, then on some smaller GE top mounts, there were only one main control. If yours has a freezer damper control, obviously turn it colder. If not turning the main thermostat will allow the whole machine to run colder. Both the freezer and the fresh food section.

Lastly, machines with light usage (less than 20 door openings on the main fridge door per day) will cause the machine to run too little, causing your problem.

Upper section of refrig. not cooloing. Remainder

check to make sure the freezer fan is turning. This should be inside the freezer unit at the top. It is probably behind an access panel.

If this fan is not turning, not enough cold air will move to the refrigerator side to keep it cold enough. If the fan has died, it will have to be replaced.

Freezer is cold but not keeping icecream frozen.

If, the fresh food section is 34- 38 degrees, then the freezer should be cold enough to keep ice cream solid. All of the cooling capability comes from the freezer section. I, personally, would not waste time or money on a ten year old box. Ten years ago it cost $1000, so, the outlay is $100 per year. Dump the old refrigerator and get a new one.

Freezer cold /refrigator warm . we have a side by side unit a couple of years old the freezer seems to work fine but the refrigator is warm .It don,t seem to make any funny noises and the back is clean

When the compressor is running, if the fan by the compressor and the fan inside the freezer are both running, and there is no frost on the back wall of the freezer (if there was frost would indicate a defrost issue) then check the air dampener. It is located at the very top left back side of the fresh food section. If it is not opening up, no air will flow from the freezer compartment (where all the cooling takes place) into the refrigerator section.
