If you aren't familiar with firewalls or ports, it may be a good idea to ask a system administrator to help you. The minimum requirement is that Skype needs unrestricted outgoing TCP access to all destination ports above 1024 or to ports 80 and 443 (the former is better, however). If you don't allow either of those, Skype will not work reliably at all. Voice quality and some other aspects of Skype functionality will be greatly improved if you also open up outgoing UDP traffic to all ports above 1024, and allow UDP replies to come back in.
In the quest for even better voice quality, it is also advisable to open up incoming TCP and/or UDP to the specific port you see in Skype Options. This port is chosen randomly when you install Skype. In the case of firewalls, this should be easy to arrange. In some routers, however, you cannot configure incoming UDP at all (but you still can configure incoming TCP port forwarding, which you could/should do).
The randomness in port selection is to improve NAT traversal for cases where several users are behind the same NAT; if they all used same ports, many NATs would behave in a way that would reduce Skype voice quality.
Also make sure that you have the latest version installed. You can do it by clicking Check for Update in Help menu in Skype or just go to the download page where you can always download the latest version.
Skype supports authenticating HTTPS/SSL and SOCKS5 proxies.
There is a version 4.1 Skype. You might need to upgrade by going to skype.com. If you already have the latest upgrade and you are on a LAN you might want to configure your LAN settings to allow access for skype. Otherwise, if you have a direct internet connection and you can get on the internet with your browser, you'll need to configure your connection to allow skype. If you have McAfee or Norton or another firewall you'll have to go to the program permissions to allow Skype. If you are also using Windows Firewall you can follow these steps to allow Skype to pass through your firewall.
Go to START + CONTROL PANEL, THEN RIGHT CLICK ON NETWORK CONNECTIONS. IN THE DIALOGUE BOX CLICK ON PROPERTIES. IN THE NEXT PANEL CLICK ON "ADVANCED". There you can set your Firewall settings to except Skype, Just click on SETTINGS + ADVANCED + EXCEPTIONS. Make sure Skype is checked. This will tell your computerl to allow skype to access the internet without being blocked by your firewall.
I hope this helps, but usually when you install Skype these settings are changed by the setup program. I suspect you have a firewall you will have to set manually. If you use Zone Alarm or some other firewall you will have to search the for help on your firewall support pages.
Sounds as if AVG is not configured properly for your email service. Some free anti-virus applications are a bit fickled. If your internet service provider is Comcast you can use McAfee for free. You need to do a complete, clean uninstall of AVG, see if they have a Removal Tool on their site. In addition check to make sure Windows Firewall or whatever firewall application you are using, is configured properly to allow Port 110 Incoming, and Port 25 Outgoing are configured to allow.
usally a problem with a router firewall, the ports for skype to send video are being blocked.
3 solutions:
1. configure your router to forward the ports needed for skype to send video via the port forwarding page (check skypes manual for the ports needed)
2. Put your computers IP in the DMZ (check the manual for how to do this, it varies from router to router, please note your computer will be completely exposed the the internet if you do this)
3. change the portt settings in skype to a open port Tools>Options>Advanced>Connection check the box for 443 and port 80
You must open ports on your router to allow incoming traffic while using eMule.
eMule uses three ports*:
4662 (TCP)
4672 (UDP)
4711 (TCP)
Visit eMule here.
* To prevent getting a low ID (Firewalled), open additional TCP ports between 4661 and 4665. Also, limit the number of connections in the eMule software. You may need to change the TCP Clientport to something other than 4662.
You can use the Virtual Server to forward an individual port to one of your computers. You cannot forward the same port to multiple computers. In order to configure the Virtual Server you need to know the IP address of the computer that needs the port opened and the service port number. The links below will help you find the IP address of your machine. If you don?t know which port needs to be opened, try checking the software manufacture?s support website for information on use behind firewall.
Configuring the Virtual Server:
Step 1 Access the device configuration by entering 192.168.0.1 in your web browser. Login with your username and password. The default username is admin and the password is blank.
Step 2a If the port you need to forward is a common port, it will be under the predefined virtual server list at the bottom of the page. Click the pad and paper icon next to the virtual server entry you want to use. The Protocol Type and Service Port fields are preconfigured. Click the Enable radio button to use the virtual server. Enter the private IP address of the computer that will use the service port. Configure the Schedule as needed, then Apply your settings.
Step 2b If the port you need to forward is not listed under the predefined virtual server list at the bottom of the page, you can create a new entry for your application. Click the Enable radio button to use the virtual server. Give your virtual server a name. Next, enter the private IP address of the computer that will use the service port. Then, select the Protocol Type and enter the Service Port. If you don?t know how to use Private and Public port assignment, then just enter the same port number in both fields. Configure the Schedule as needed and Apply your settings.
