Monitor could be blown - no picture or your hard drive might be fried. At boot up look continually tap the F8 key until you get to the "Safe Mode" screen. Choose to boot into safe mode and see if that works. If it doesn't - its either the monitor or the hard drive.
There are some other recovery options depending on which version of windows you are using.

You can use your cd drive for installation.
To run the check disk utility you will need a repair disc or
a operating system disc. Put the disc in the cd drive and boot from
it. You want to get to the Dos Command Prompt (Black screen with white
letters) and type the following command: chkdsk /r
Check disk will run well over an hour or two and you will notice the
percentages going from high to low, this is normal. Let it run to
completion. Then reboot machine.
If check disk fails to solve your problem you might have to reinstall windows.
Try doing a Repair Install that way you don't loose your data, documents,
music, pictures, videos or programs.
In windows xp you get to the dos command prompt by selecting R for repair when
the options appear.
In Vista and Windows 7 you want to get to the recovery
console and look down at the bottom of the window for the Dos Command.

Fixed with system restore to previous config. Used "Assist" button to enter BIOS/restore menu. Romano at Sony phone assistance was great.
I have a Sony Tap 20 with windows 8 and it is giving me the same problem. I see the VAIO logo at the beginning and the screen blanks out. I can see that the hard disk is running. I tried the Assist button and it does not do anything. Where can I get help in this regard? Appreciate any advice.
