From my days of using my parent's slide projector, the motor does keep running if you hold your finger on the cycle button. One press is one advance. There is an owner manual here for $15.
Not familiar with this particular model, but on many slide projectors rotating the front lens focuses the image. If you have tried this and been unsuccessful, then the slide retaining mechanism may have become displaced or need adjustment.

with no electronics the tension on the valve body housing is critical as it can deform and jam the spool valve

You may be able to purchase such a book from an accredited transmission specialist shop or at least get copies of pages
If you see a hole on the thumbscrew post, you have to line it up with the hole in the solid post by screwing it in or out until it does. Then you put the string through. Hope this helps.
