When i put a disk (bluray, dvd, etc) the disc inside sound very noisy. The disc lock (the metal/rubber disc that press the bluray over the rotary pad) is too loose or anything has wrong assembly. What i must check?
Inside the DVD drive unit, there are a double microswitch on tray drive circuit board. Open this switch very carefully and clean the contacts. Carefully close the switch again. This cured my problem with the tray opening all the time.
I had the same problem and unplugging it doesn't help. I found that if I unplug it AND remove the HDMI plug the system resets itself so that when you plug the system back in, you can open the disc tray.

Try this. Switch to a very high quality blank media disc. The very best Tayio Yuden now under the JVC name. See if the same problem returns or is corrected. I personally have a high end SONY combo hard disk/dvd recorder. It gave me fits until I learned a few tricks. The first was the quality. You will be amazed how that can alter things. SuperMediaStore.com carries the blank media line. If you can't find that brand for RW discs try Sony's own brand. Does your -R or +R discs give your problems too? My second trick solves problems related to the uniform spinning of the media while recording (or playing back). Rubber parts that grip the disc for spin get glazed periodically and must be kept live and vibrant. There is only one method I found that really does the job. The rubber (usually donut shaped like a rubber washer) is found on the spindle that receives the disc to keep it gripped properly while it is spinning. If it is slipping, it usually messes up the disc permanently (during record). On play back of a recorded disc, it shows up as block noise and picture freeze. If you can decase the machine and expose this area, that's ideal. On my machine, it's not that easy. My workaround is to have the disc tray in open mode. Pull the electrical cord on the unit, then with a thin flashlight, look in past the open tray. Most probably you'll have to slide the tray in part way to see the spindle. When you locate it, make note of the rubber part that would grip the dvd disc. USE ONLY BERRYMANS LIQUID CARBURATOR CLEANER. You can buy this at automotive stores. Soak a Q-tip in the cleaner and then tape it onto the end of a very thin metal ruler. Extend the Q-tip to reach the rubber part and swab it as best you can slowly rotating the spindle to get all the way around the round rubber part. If needed, you may find that it evaporates quickly on your Q-tip and needs a second soaking to apply enough to break the glaze on the rubber. VERY VERY IMPORTANT - MAKE SURE YOU UNDERSTAND THIS. THE CARBURETOR CLEANER IS FLAMMABLE AND EXTREMELY POWERFUL. TOUCH PLASTIC PARTS WITH THIS CHEMICAL AND YOU MELT THEM. BE MOST CAREFUL THAT YOU ONLY APPLY YO THE RUBBER PARTS. If it's a glaze issue and you can get the chemical to wipe over the rubber, it should make your Q-tip blackend showing you it's working. Wait at least 5 - 10 minutes for a complete dry before you first slide your disc tray to it's home position and then plug the power cord back in. ****This chemical also does a great job revitelizing rubber wiper blades on a car. it could be one of several things, with some of these drives it uses a friction wheel at the center of the disk to "spin" the disk, this uses a circular rubber traction disk to grip the disk on both sides and then spins the disk using this traction, ( if the rubber there is not good it will not work well)
the other kind of spindle is a press on spindle which has a spring loaded grip mechanism where the disk is clipped onto the spindle,
the other issue is that you may have a driveband failure, this basically a rubber band which drives the main drivewheel from the drive motor, these can wear out or perish.
lastly, it could be a bad/burned out drive motor,
all of these issues can be fixed by the manufacturer and some of these can be fixed relatively easy by the user if the unit is out of warranty
Does the unit emit a groaning sound just before it fails? If so, then the drive spindle is the problem; the sound is caused by the slipping of the disk on the spindle. It could be contaminated with particles (dust, DDV plastic. etc). Look for scratches on the inner ring area of the bottom side of the DVD. those are an indication of foreign material on the spindle. It may be worse with disks that have been used many times. Just touching the hub area with your fingers can leave contaminates. Try first cleaning the disk hub area on the botton side. Stay away from the writable area. The drive spindle can be cleaned by removing the metal top from the unit and then removing the black plastic cover from the drive top (4 screws). Wipe clean the rubber surface on the top side of the spindle. Then replace the covers. As the unit ages, the rubber will get harder and more prone to slipping. A cotton cloth soaked in alcohol may be used to clean and refresh the rubber surface as a last resort. Reply to this message if you want pictures of the process.
Hey this is a great site! I was having a similar problem with my Toshiba SD-K860. Bobbyj, thanks for the link to the SD-4900 service manual, it was extremely helpful even though it was a different model. I could not find an emergency eject pinhole, and leaving the unit unplugged for a while did not help (two suggestions found on other sites), so I simply took the whole thing apart, got the disc out, found the eject slider on the bottom of the tray, massaged the tray open and closed, and put everything back together again. The connections were solid and the belt was in tact so everything seemed to be fine. Once I reassembled and powered it back up it worked again! I posted a more detailed solution on my problems to solve site, which is similar to this one: http://problemstosolve.com/solved/toshiba-sd-k850-wont-eject-solved/
I know this is very late to reply, but here it goes anyway. The groaning sound if from the DVD disc slipping on the drive spindle. There is probably a buildup of particles on the rubber surface of the spindle, probably from the DVDs themselves. Remove the metal cover from the unit. Then remove the 4 screws from the top of the black plastic drive and lift off the top. Locate the drive spindle in the middle of the drive and carefully wipe the rubber ring surface on the top surface of the spindle. Use a clean piece of cotton dampened with alcohol. Then install the drive top panel and metal unit cover. You wioll need to repeat this periodically whenever the groaning symptom reappears.
Bad Cdrom/dvd The laser going bad is a pretty common issue with the drives, since it's a Hitachi that spindle motor could be all gunked up with dirt as well and cause that issue also.
if ya have a Hitachi, if it's a Samsung it could just be the laser. http://www.llamma.com/xbox/Repairs/xbox_dvd_repair.htm
check to see if tray is out of alignmnet ..also check to see if 5 or 7 pin flat ribbon cable form servo drive board to tray got dislodged from connector or is bent, cut etc...
Remove the cover of LVW and access the DVD assy, unscrew the 4 screws holding the DVD assy to the LVW bottom, remove the top and bottom shield (also 4 screws)and remove the top black plastic cover (4 screws). You will access the DVD spindle.Remove the disk if you still have a disk stuck inside.Visually check the spindle sticky rubber ring, most likely some sticky material migrated on top of the rubber ring and your DVD was stuck on it. Clean the best you can with a cleaner and a non lint cloth.I used a cleaner/degreaser for electronics.DO NOT POWER your LVW BEFORE reinstalling the black plastic cover. There is a laser inside !!! You may now try and if the drawer opens and closes, reassemble everything opposite way you disassembled.
