Stopped playing Blu Ray discs yesterday after about one year. Player reads "can't play". Still plays standard discs fine. This is not just new Blu Ray but all --- even discs that I played previously. Tried resetting as stated on page 53 of manual and have 4.3 firmware. Tried to update to 4.5 but read "can't play" as well. I don't know what else to try. Any suggestions?
Sounds like a defective Drive
Generally speaking, if the Blu-ray player is working properly and has no further wrong codecs or configurations, then it may be possible that your Blu-ray discs are not able to be read by the Blu-ray player.
You can check on this for possible causes and solutions:
Why Won't My Blu-ray Players Play Blu-ray Discs
SOURCE: our blu-ray disc player bdp-s300 won't play newest blu-ray
You will need the following:
1) Internet connection
2) Wired router
3) long enough ethernet cable to reach from your blue ray player to the router.
Step 1:
Eject any disks and turn off the blu-ray player by unplugging it.
Step 2:
Attach the ethernet cable to the router and the other end to the ethernet port on the back of the blu-ray player.
Step 3:
Turn on the blu-ray player and wait for it to load all the way.
Step 4:
Using the remote, arrow over to the left to "Setup", the up to "Network Update".
Step 5:
After the unit updates and restarts, repeat until it tells you "Already Updated".
That should help you play the newer movies, and even some of the older ones.

I successfully updated to 4.5. It still won't play Indian Jones - Crystall Skull, or 2001 Space Odyssey. I've called the help line at least 5 times. I guess it's my problem. But guess what, Sony and blue ray has lost a customer.
I feel cheated
Would that be something I can fix or do I need to replace the player? Thanks for your help!!
Have bought Kung fu Panda and Hellboy 2 but all that happens is the menu. When I select play it switches the DVD player off.
I have exactly this same problem. It stopped working while I was playing a Blu-Ray movie and now it won't play any Blu-Ray discs. Even discs that previously played. If anyone finds a solution, please post it here.
My bdps300 wouldn't play Kungfu Panda. I updated firmware to 4.5 and then Kungfu Panda played fine. However, a week later, player has become very twitchy and refuses to play any BD's at all, even ones that previously played fine. DVD's are hit and miss. This much money and the thing doesn't last very long? I think BD tech is not mature enough to warrant continued support, maybe in 3-5 years. . . .
Standard DVDs play with out a problem and Blu-rays play occasionally. I'v updated to 4.5 no imporvement.
If you are getting the Cannot Read error when updating, make sure you are saing as an "image" and not a file the software to do this is provided with the update. Just open the update file and the software will load to copy it to disk
I’ve had mine for over a year (Christmas 2007), and it played everything just fine until 3 days ago. Now it plays nothing. It either says “can’t play” or “no disc”. What can be done?
got the update disc from sony still will not play blu ray disc
This player has always been a little flaky for me. Several times it would freeze, but on multiple occasions, a firmware update would solve the problem. Just today however, I think it crapped out for good. It won't read any discs, even ones it played before. I noticed it was becoming more and more difficult to keep movies from skipping, and now they just won't play at all. I have to assume it is the drive, and probably the laser is just dirty. I may try having it cleaned, but if that costs 50% or more of what a new unit will cost, I'll probably just get another player. And it is not likely to be a Sony.
I faced same problem just hour ago, while attempting to watch Godfather pack. After failing (I checked all settings and changed parental controls for age 20), I inserted Cars and now it won't play. Luckily my son just watched it yesterday.
I will now upgrade to 4.50 (I had 4.40) and let's see if it helps at all. Tomorrow though I will buy a new player - any suggestions ?
i put in godfather and it sounds like its trying to read but wont play it. says no disc or something. took to store and it works. 1/2 my movies wont play
Sony won't play any BLU RAY DISCS.
I have had the same problem with my BDP S300, I have stayed up to date with firmware, currently at 4.5. Now it can't read any of my discs. I contacted Sony support, but they have been know help. I have 2 friends with the exact same problem. If this problem is so common why won't Sony step up. Has anyone had any luck with any out of warranty claims with Sony?
