Flip Video not working. Tried to turn on and thought batteries were dead - replaced with new and still not turning on. Plugged into computer via USB and it was not recognised. Plugged into TV to play videos and also not recognised.
For the Flip Ultra - Take out batteries you should see a flat somewhat square piece of metal with a small black piece sticking up from it. Take a pencil and push the black piece down wait a few minutes then try turning your flip back on.
THANK YOU!! Why is this not listed in the book or on the website---thank God for the internet!
Thank you SO MUCH! I thought it had broke and I had just borrowed it from my sister. Honestly - thank you sooo much!!
Fantastic!!! Thank you very much or posting this!!
my goodness, you are a life saver! i wish i had this problem before we went skiing today so i could've had some skiing footage. what causes this?
AWESOME!!! Thanks so much...
That worked Thank You!!
You just saved me a lot of tears... we have tons of videos from the past few months of our 10 month old crawling for the first time, dancing, saying momma/dadda, all the bit milestones up to this point... I thought we'd lost them! backing them up NOW...
When I turned it on, I had the red light flashing but, nothing else. I used the solutions here, reseting the black piece for 5sec and then waiting. It didn't work. I took the batteries out plugged it in to the computer, it came on and synced up with the computer. I then registered it and updated the drivers. I put the batteries back in.. nothing. I did the "two silver battery terminals. Take a small screwdriver and pry them up toward you"... nothing. I then took a volt-meter tested the batteries. They were fine, only down a little. I tried one last thing before giving up. I reset ("Take out batteries you should see a flat somewhat square piece of metal with a small black piece sticking up from it. Take a pencil and push the black piece down wait a few seconds then try turning your flip back on") and put new fresh batteries that tested above the 1.5volt (1.5452) AND IT WORKED! I don't know which solution was the one that worked and I don't care. I just wished that I had "googled" the question before my 7yr granddaughter's black belt test. Thanks for taking the time and posting these solution and don't give up quickly.
what do you do if its the newest flip camera.. because that is what i have and i don't see a place where you would take out the batteries.
it worked for me! I was afraid I'd have to buy a new one! thank you!

Take out the batteries. Look inside the battery compartment and you will see the two silver battery terminals. Take a small screwdriver and pry them up toward you. This will make the batteries fit tighter in the compartment when the door is closed. It worked for me!
I've been having this problem all day, my flip worked fine yesterday and then after uploading the software it would not turn on today. Then I took out the batteries and put them back it. Pressed the on button and it worked! How strange...
My flip camera is only 4 months old. I have the same problem with this camera as you all do. I have tried the solutions (all) and the camera worked for only 20 minutes. Now nothing works, nor the updates not anything the factory reps recommended. But I have come up with a solution. Take your flip camera, run it over with your vehicle, smash the memory chip well with a hammer, go to your nearest Walmart, buy any cheap camcorder they have on sale. I did that in 2004 when I bought a cheap $50.00 camcorder for my neice's graduation and her cheap camcorder after having been dropped from a crop-dusting airplane over El Centro CA and miraculously found again after noting the spot on the GPS from 900 feet while crop dusting, still works to this day and she relies on it for everything. There! I hope I was helpful.
If you have a flip Ultra
1.Take the batteries out for 72 hours
2.(DO NOT PUT BATTERIES IN) Connect to a computer USB port
3. Update software
4. Once the software has updated STOP THE USB CONNECTION
5. Now Press Record, Delete, and Power
6. Wait for serial number to appear
7. power down the unit
-GOOD LUCK!
beautiful - a slight variation of this solution worked for me after suffering a dead flip ultra HD II for almost a YEAR! I tried new batteries, resetting software, deleting software, everything. I took the batteries out, flipped the small little black piece of plastic in between the battery bays, then left the batteries and waited a few minutes, adjusted the battery connecters with a knife(pulled em forward a bit) to have better contact with the batteries, then powered it up and it was reset, asking me for the new date etc. This was after a YEAR of not being able to use it. Dont give up! if you are one that gets the splash screen at the beginning and then just a black screen is IS fixable, just keep trying all variations of the fixes here!!

My Flip after one year of use wouldn't load after powering on. It was not recognized by my computer--all for no good reason. The following procedure reset my Flip Ultra 60 minute. Press all at the same time: record, delete, and power buttons. This will bring up the serial number and version etc. on a black screen. Copy it all down if you haven't done so before. Then turn off the unit. In a little while turn the Flip back on. It will reset it self and ask you to reset the date and time again as you did when you first got it. Now it should be good to go! Mine is.
If you have the older flip video with AA batteries, take them out and leave them out for 72 hours. This should allow an internal capacitor to discharge. This is what the Flip people told me. It did not work for me but is worth trying. There is no reset button on this one unlike the Flip Mino.
Put in "Duracell" brand batteries
Go to this link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dov1ZufyYpM if you have a flip mino and it'll help
I have had a Flip for 2 days and on vacation in Israel. It now doesn't turn on at all and I tried everything above. Basically, its a piece of garbage for that real alone. I'm VERY dissapointed.
I had the same problem, tried the reset button under the batteries but did not help. Removed the batteries for one day and replaced same batteries again next day, powered on my camera and it worked fine since then.
When i charge my new flip ultra HD, the battery indicator eventually turns green but when i get ready to use it - i check the battery level by connecting it to the computer - the indicator is red suggesting it needs to be charged.

For my Flip Ultra (with AA batteries). I used a variation on a theme by RichBb.
I tried his solution and all I got was a dark screen. But at least it made it past the Flip video screen. What I did next was all accidental, but if it works for you....1. Followed RichBb suggestion to hold the power slide down while holding the record and delete buttons. All simultaneously.2. I got a black (or dark) screen and nothing happened.3. I plugged it into a USB port on my computer and nothing happened.4. I unplugged it and snapped the camera's USB 'arm' back into place. At this point, Rich Bb's screen with all the camera information came up.5. I turned off the camera using the power slide. Which I hadn't been able to do since this all started.6. I waited about 10 minutes and turned it on. It worked fine. I had to rest date and time, but it is now working.7. For how long? I don't know.Hope this helps someone.
I have one of the old cheap FLIPs, it plugs into a USB to charge, no batteries. I shot a 20 minute video this morning and after, it would not turn on...I found directions to reset by holding the on/off button in for 10 seconds. It worked and I put it in the USB to recharge the dead battery...YEAH it's working again..
I have the original Ultra HD flip, I keep mine in a travelers case its nice and snug i have no damages, at first it wouldn't recognize my computer then the battery wouldn't hold a charge i barley use it i turned it on before leaving my house and it worked really need my Flip Camera yesterday and it wouldn't turn on, all it is now is an expensive paper weight FLIP, YOU ARE A DISAPPOINTMENT. Its sad i have to use my cell phone camera.

Solution 11 was just what I needed for the Flip Mino. The YouTube video describes the small reset button found at the base of the Flip. If you locate the screw-in portal used for attaching tripods, you should see a tiny black hole at the base of this. Using the end of a paper clip, you can feel the button give a little as you push into this hole. Hold for ten seconds. Repeat three times. Recharge and the flip should start up. You will need to reset the default settings. No idea if this applies to other models, but it worked for me. My daughter is much pleased.
Mine wouldn't turn on or charge, I hit the little reset button that stephenkn342 described and it did the trick....and I only pressed it once for 2 seconds.

The same thing just happened to me!
DITTO
WONT TURN ON OR CHARGE IN THE COMPUTER WITH THE USB. AND IT HAS RARELY BEEN USED - MAYBE 5 TIMES AND NOW IT'S NOT FUNCTIONING
Bought three cams - one of three were dead out of box - other two turned on but then one of shut off and won't turn on...
same thing. Power flicks on for a second, then shuts off.....
I have the same problem, it's in completely good condition but all of a sudden it will not turn on at all, and I have fully charged batteries.
Add me to the list. Camera has been used less than 5 times and was working fine until today. Now there is nothing when we try to power it on. Fresh batteries don't help. Am waiting for a response from CS but I'm one month out of warranty so not expecting much.
Have only used the camera about 8 times while golfing. Haven't used it in a while, and it won't turn on. Have been charging all day yet with no luck. Any ideas?
Same problem. I've probably used it 4 times. There is no response at all.
same here!!! iv used it for a while then batteries whent dead put fresh ones in and no response just a black screen!! help!!!!
I have exactly the same problem. Pure digital won't do anything about it because my problem started shortly after the 90 day warrenty period. They honestly do expect people to pay over $100 for something that lasts 3 months.
Same thing here...
I have exactly the same problem. No response, changed batteries, and still no response. No longer even recognized by my computer anymore.
Also I bought it in December so the 90 days is just used up!
pc
my flip fell in the pool and i changed batteries but no power :(
I got mine in March last year, used it once for an hour and the batteries went dead, so i put fresh ones in. never used it until this month but now all it does it come up with the home screen and then turns off.
