Seems optical lens of unit is causing problem of No Disc.
Clean optical lens with cleaner disc and then try to play dvd.
If still same problem, take unit to local repair shop for fix.

My Sony DVP-CX995V quit playing DVD's. I was listening to a CD, stoped it, went to menu, picked a DVD and bow it say's " Cannot Read Disc " On ALL of My DVD's. All CD's & DVD's are storebought. I've had...

does the spindle motor even try and spin the disk? Pop the top (8 screws) and watch the loader grab a disk and place into transport. The disc should immediantly start to spin and the little laser should scoot back and forth looking for something. If the disc never spins but the laser is moving, you may have a bad motor, or a bad pickup (transport mechanism includes motor and laser pickup). A replacement for this model is about $125 but you can get the same part out of a cheap DVP-S360 for about $20 on ebay. Just make sure you ask if it works before you buy it on BOTH CD and DVD as its 2 different lasers in that part.

SONY DVD-CX995V "cannot play"

In that symptoms optical block (lens) sounds defective and requires replacement.
Let me know if you want to replace optical block by yourself to provide you more technical info.

Sony CX995v "Cannot Play" message on DVDs but plays CDs O.K.

Hi...
The laser goes thru a different lens arraignment for DVDs.
Take it to a TV shop and have them "blow out" the laser assembly with some CO2 and clean the lens.

My Sony DVP-cx995v stopped playing DVD's

I had the same "Cannot play" problem - happened suddenly, I don't think I was doing anything unruly at the time.

After checking repair (exchange) prices in excess of $250 from Sony, I decided to open the cover to see if I could see anything wrong - normally a futile exercise with electronics except that in the past I have cleared errant disks that have lodged themselves near the drive/player at the rear of the library.

Upon opening and watching the library try to load and play I noticed the drive itself was not spinning the disk once loaded. It would sit for awhile, thinking about it I'm sure, then would unload and load the next dvd, again failing to spin.

I thought okay, maybe try to spin the dvd while in the player to see if it's jammed or otherwise hard to turn. It was not hard to turn and spun freely. In fact, when I put my finger through the hole at the exposed side of the player at the hub to spin the dvd, clockwise, it suddenly started to spin - and play!

I put the whole thing back together to test and all seems to be working fine at this point. Not sure what would cause the motor to stop spinning and remain in that state through poweroff/on cycles etc. but I'm sure this is not the last time I will have trouble of this kind.

I would note that when replacing the library back in its home on the shelf, be careful not to tip the library, especially toward the player area because the disks will spill out of the carousel near the player and become jammed when you power it on and attempt to load. A final tip of the library away from the player area may clear this if you hear the disks rolling out of their slots and you don't want to open the top again (it's a darned heavy box when fully loaded).

Good luck!

Suddenly "cannot play this disk" on Sony DVD/CD..every DVD...CD's work!

I have the same problem. I have a 5 year warranty from the company I purchased the unit from. I am not sure if they will replace it or not. I am reluctant to buy another one with this known issue. We have enjoyed the unit for nearly 3 years with no issues.
