Hey I just got the Brother MFC-7840W Printer/Scanner/Faxer and I am clueless as to how to get it to scan? Nothing was said in the setup and the user's guide is dedicated solely to how to Print and Fax. Nothing on Scanning! HEEEEEEELP!!!!
Hi, normally, if you have installed the complete driver set, the easiest way is to run a program with scanning capability i.e. photoshop, or word. the software normally given with a scanner is a 'twain' which becomes linked to the photoshop program. If you have MS word (I'll use this as an exAmple ), ensure the scanner software is installed, the brother switched on and connected to the computer correctly click Insert select picture then scanner - (or it may say twain). At this point the Brother mini program - the 'twain' should start and then follow the scanner instructions and a scan of whAtever you have selected should be inserted into the word document. Bit of trivia - TWAIN stands for Tool With An Interesting Name - yup it really is!.

first thing, scan the document and when you typed the filename below that box is option, you can select what extension name you want to that file select pdf and click save. be sure you have pdf reader or acrobat reader etc..
Follow these steps to scan: •1 Open the software program that came from your scanner.
•2 Lift the lid of your scanner, place photo on scanner bed and close the lid.
•3 Press the "Scan" button on the scanner or in your scanner software program.
•4 Preview the scanned photo on your computer screen and check that the borders are straight and even. Rescan the photo if you make changes.
Hello, We need to first check the driver to make sure it is installed and working correctly. Please go to “start menuè control panelè scanners and cameras”. (Note: For Vista users, you must select “classic view” in control panel to be able to see “scanners and cameras”) You should now see all scanners currently installed. If you do see your brother scanner, please right click the icon and select “properties”; here you can select “test scanner”. If the test fails, select the “network settings” tab. Here you can have the driver set to locate the device by name or by IP address, please select IP address and make sure the IP address matches that of your brother machine. To get the IP address on your brother, print out the network settings page; either with the “report” button on the printer or go “menuè print reports” If the scanner does not appear in the list at all, you will need to reinstall the software. You can download the software using the below link. http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/Public/CountryTop.aspx?reg=us&c=ca&lang=en If your scanner successfully completed the diagnostic test, we can move on to try using control center to scan. To access Control Center, please go to “Start menuè All programsè brotherèControl Center”. In Control center, please make sure the correct device is being selected in the ”model” drop down list. Thanks,
Do you have XP? If so open control panel and select Scanners and Cameras then select your scanner and follow instructions.
There is also a demo here for your machine.
I have the same problem. It was working fine, then after not using it for a few weeks, all the sudden I couldn't scan. I'm hooked up wirelessly through my router. I can initiate a scan both from my PC and from the scanner itself, when initated from the scanner my PC responds and shows the progress bar, and the scanner actually scans. However for some reason no data is being sent back to the PC. And after a few minutes I get an error message saying that communication was lost (or something like that) error TW007. Yesterday I called into brother support and was on the phone for an hour and a half. they walked me through verifying connectivity, uninstalling and reinstalling the software and drivers, but to no avail. In the end we made no progress. I can print without a problem, and fax and photocopy. But for some reason it seems that the scanner is not transmitting the information back to the computer, even through the connection was established and the computer is waiting for the data.
I had a similar problem. I was able to print and scan for months and then all of a sudden could not scan anymore (from printer or through software interface). I then found out that the IP address for the scanner was not set properly. To fix this, goto control panel and scanner and cameras. Right click on the MFC7840W and select PROPERTIES. On the network setting tab, make sure that the IP address is the same as that on the MFC7840W.
i had the same issue - was previously able to scan to a number of different formats, then switched modems, providers and then only the scan to ftp option came up.
took me about an hour to figure out the solution, but now it works
for windows users:
* go to your control panel
* go to the scanners & cameras section
* your printer/scanner should show up here
* right click on it and select 'properties'
* select the network settings tab and then
-- enter in the correct ip address here OR
-- specify your machine by name (enter in name here)
hope this helps!
