I have a dell inspiron 530 with xp and vista, recently i was unable to connect to the net on xp, i get the error of no dial tone, but i can connect on vista.I reinstall all the modem driver on xp but same error.Any ideas?
I reinstall all the modem driver on xp, so that mean i install the correct drive from the dell cd. Plz, if you cannot get a good solution let it be cause the only solution i have to do a whole xp reinstallation.so Im doing that now. Thx

U need to double confirm the phone line whether got dial tone or not. What u can do is to plug the phone line to a single line phone. If dial tone is available, u can able to make call.

That error message is usually coupled with removing an adapter connected to a RAID device. Have you disconnected anything in your computer recently? Have you opened it and cleaned it recently? If you've opened it to clean it, there's a chance that something may have come loose. If you know what you're doing on the inside of a computer, you can go through and make sure that everything is properly connected and then try booting again too see if that works.
Generally this is an indication of a modem failure. If there have been any storms in your area, then the modem may have been zapped. The dial tone curcuit is normally the first casualty when a modem gets hit with more power than normal.
Provided that your telephone is functional on that line (Unplug modem, and connect a handset if this is a modem only line and see if the handset gets a dial tone, this is a good check to make sure the line is functional)
open internet explorer, go to tools, internet options, then the connections tab and make sure ' never dial a connection' is ticked, assuming you had a dial up connection before using the router on this pc or if you briefly used it.
ican connect on vista and not xp, so there is dial tone
