I accidentally washed a pair of pants with cigarettes in the pockets (6months ago) I assumed over time the smell would leave the washing machine. It hasnt, in fact it smells as bad or worse then the day I did it. Could there be cigarette butts or tobacco trapped somewhere in the washer? How could I clean this out? The machine is a Maytag Neptune (Front loader). Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks
The best suggestion I can givefor this is to use a tablet called Affresh. http://www.affresh.com/
This is a great cleaner for all HE washers. I hope this helps.

Gunk is from wrappers left in pockets, cheap fabrics throwing off gobs of lint, etc. no gunk is normal for good fabrics and emptied pockets. As to smell: do not use fabric softener use white vinegar in its place, and use powdered detergent instead if liquid detergent. Liquids leave residue and the residue leaves build ups which can mildew. I know that's counterintuitive but that is what happens.
If the washer is still was your cloth to the end cycle that ,ean the machine is good. To prevent the smell, make sure leave the door open after use. so the moisture not trap in the machine which can cause to smell for the next time you use.
Make sure that you are using high efficiency (he) detergent. Pour 2 cups of vinegar in the tub and fill the detergent tray with vinegar. Run it on the hottest, longest cycle. You can also use a Front load cleaner such as Afresh, made by Whirpool. I think that Tide makes one too. Vinegar is usually readily available. At the end of washing for the day, leave the door to the washer slightly open so that fresh air can get in and dry it out keeping moldy, milduey smell down. If it mildews, use a rag and bleach water to clean the boot seal. Hope this helps.
the musty smell is from the door boot or gasket. deposit from clothes and detergent get trapped in there and have nowhere else to go. i would recommend purchasing Washerfresh tables to get rid of the deposits. they are available all over.
I have the same problem with a 3 month old ge front loading washer.after 1 month it started off smelling musty..I thought it was my imagination, now at 3 months old our clothes smell so bad I think we might just have to buy new clothes! everytime I wash a load the clothes smell worse and now you can even smell it just walking into our closet 2 floors up. A new washing washing machine should NOT be doing this! so far leaving the door open in between washes has helped a little but I plan on tipping it back and finding the hidden filter today. Isn't it lovely that they don't mention a filter that needs monthly cleaning or it's location in the manuals?!
