Why is it that sometimes I can watch DVDs on Windows Media Player and sometimes not?

Sometimes I can't get my DVDs to play on my laptop. I have an Asus and it uses Windows Media Player to play my movies. Sometimes it will play movies, and other times it won't (even with the same DVD). It will let me be on the main menu for the DVD, but once I hit play, I get a short glimpse of the scene and it just stops. :( The DVD isn't scratched or anything so I'm not quite sure. Also, I'm not really looking for a new type of player deal (unless it's SUPER easy and safe), I just want to know how to fix my Windows Media Player to play them. Thanks for any help!!! Big or small!!! :)

Some movies are encoded with a protection the Disc acts as if you are tempting to copy the write protected dvd. you can get a program for free called shrink dvd that will remove the protection and copy the movie to your Pc so you can watch it.

Some DVDs come with region codes and they may not play on Windows Media Player. You can download a region free DVD player program and then you can play any DVD discs from any region and with any region codes. You can try Leawo Blu-ray Player which is a region free Blu-ray and DVD player and it is free.

You need a new DVD codec. If you have a copy of WinDVD, give it an install. Otherwise, try the free codec on www.divx.com.

Hello,

Please try to update your codec in your Windows Media Player to ensure that the Windows Media Player will read the data in the Disk. Also you can download different types of player that has bundled with complete codec. Please try to download K-Lite Codec Pack Player or VLC Player.

Please select the version of your player that supports your current operating system. Then Begin to download nyh clicking the download link or button.

thanks

Will not play dvds

LOL, wow that's an oddity, normally it's the other way around where it plays store bought but not burned. Make sure you are not trying to play Blue Ray in a Regular DvD Player.

Oh, one more real important point. If you're using Windows Media Player as the player, that might be your problem. Media Player cannot handle all types of media devices and sometimes they don't give you a message saying anything because it just don't recognize a disc is even in the drive.

Go to www.google.com and in the search box type "Download VLC Player" (without the quotes). Look for the site www.videolan.org/vlc in the search results and click it. That's where you want to download it from. VLC is an open source player that will play any type of video format. It is far greater than Windows Media Player. It installs in less than 3 minutes and it is fast and smooth. You'll love it. After you install it put your cd in the drive and you will probably be prompted as to which player to play it with. Click VLC. If VLC is not shown as one of the listed players chose the option to browse to chose it. Now after all this, if you still can't play the dvd, then your drive is faulty.

Windows Media Player can play most CDs or DVDs but sometimes the format is not understood. The best all round free video player I have found is VLC which you can download at www.videolan.org

DVD Movie

By default, Windows does not include a DVD decoder (which is what you need to watch DVDs).
If you are using WMP10: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/plugins.aspx
If you are using WMP11:
http://savvybytes.com/2006/10/02/playing-dvds-with-windows-media-player-11/

Install the codec and you will be able to watch DVDs!
