If you mean it shuts down then the battery is most likely failing, if you mean the programs stop running then try doing a memory dump, get rid of all the old data files you can. Transferring as much data to a SD memory card helps as well
It sounds to me like the internal memory petition has gone bad. When this happens it will retain no changes and boots up like it was when new every time it's turned off. Any changes are only retained if you put it to sleep and keep it charged. If the memory partition for apps has gone bad it will no longer be able to download or update apps from the Store and you will be stuck with the original apps and that is all unless you can managed to download some apps to an external SD card in the slot (if it has one).
You can tell if your memory partition has gone bad by using
Settings > Storage and observe the top bar graph. if it's green all the way across and shows 0.00 bytes of storage then the internal SD card memory partition is gone or the memory is defective.
Even so, you should still be able to synch using Google to do so. But, never turn it off again or you will be back to square one again and will have to do everything over and over and over.
I have a Nobis NBO9 that has this same problem. They fixed it once but it went bad again two weeks later. And, they balked at fixing it a second time so I got ripped off. I suspect there is a lot of defective internal SD memory cards in circulation from the reports I see as I research these failures.
This works with devices having physical home button:- 1. Press the power button and the home button together
for a while, long enough until the screen appears with Android bot and a
progress bar which shows that it's formatting the internal memory. With NO physical HOME button:- 2. In case your device does not have a physical home button, press the power button and both the volume keys together for few seconds. 3. Press gently the "reset pin-hole" present generally on a side of Tablet. Use a clip-pin or similarly fine thing to gently push inside to reset your device to factory settings.

From what I have found on this issue it looks like you will need to restore your nook back to factory settings. Any books you bought and backed up from Barnes & Nobles should re-download once you have restored the device and re-registered.
To complete a factory fallback:
1. Turn your device completely off.
2. Power up the device while holding in both the power button and the physical "n" button at the bottom of your NOOKcolor.
3.
The device should begin to power up and you will see the welcome screen
however keep holding both buttons down and the device will power down.
4. Repeat step 2.
5. When the welcome screen comes up, release both buttons.
6.
The device will begin to power on and then a window will pop up asking
if you would like to restore your device. Press the "n" button once and
again to confirm.
7. The NOOKcolor will restore itself to full factory defaults and will startup as if it were brand new.
8. Re-register your device (while connected to a WiFi network) and you will start over fresh
The driver irql_not_less_or_equal error can have multiple causes, but most of the time it is a hardware/driver issue. Check if there are any new drivers available for you computer's hardware devices and update them if so. Running a memory test also does not harm, could be faulty RAM.
are you able to keep your pc on for sometime
