Quantity / total * 100.0 = percentage. You can enter the quantity and the total in different cells and then use a third cell for the calculation (such as =A1/A2*100.0) or enter data in a single cell (such as =250/1000*100.0).

To calculate a percentage in excel you simply take
amount/total = percentage in your cell

Example A B Purchase price Sales tax (in decimal form) 800 0.089 Formula Description (Result) =A2*B2 Multiplies 800 by 0.089 to find the amount of sales tax to pay ($71.20)
