SOURCE: machine will not agitate. makes noise
HI. This issue you are having concerning the noise you are hearing from the agitator, can be resolved by replacing the clutch assembly. This assembly is responsible for initiating the agitating nature of this device. Seems to be some stripped out pieces that are vital to smooth and correct motion. I would also take a good look at the drive shaft assembl;y as well. there may be parts here that may need to be replaced as well. Finally, I would check to make sure the gear case(tranmission) is also functioning correctly. i suspect the clutch assembly is stripped or missing some vital parts that have broken off.
please rate and god bless.
SOURCE: washer makes grinding noise
many of the Maytags have had a problem with the pump bearing. This is what it sounds like. Tilt the washer back. Look underneath and take the belt off. The pulley on the pump is metal. try turning with your hand both ways. If it grinds that is problem. Let me know if need more info.
SOURCE: I have top load maytay belt drive, will not engae extract
I have a nice pictoral on replacing the thrust bearing on these maytag toploading washers you might want to take a look at. The thing washers in one direction and spins in opposite direction as you may well know. The pump is prone to lock up on these machines so I would remove the belt and turn that pump to see if it might be getting hard to turn. If it is hard for you to turn then it is hard for that motor to turn it also. I have a page here that gives a link to the repairs I am speaking of with photos: HERE
