Best guess is that the gear for 3rd speed is seized together with it's brass bushing and the center, large transmission shaft. I don't recall which gear is for 3rd, but the transmission has two gears (2nd and 3rd speed) which have brass bushings in them. The brass bushing should spin freely on the center shaft (when in final position - sometimes they pull off the shaft tough, but spin freely when in final position, my opinion is that this is OK), and the gear should spin freely of the brass bushing. My guess is that the 3rd speed gear, being seized to the center shaft, cannot freely idle on the center shaft, which would result in being stuck in 3rd gear.
Do you mean upshifting starts way early? Going from 2nd to 3rd in other words?
Ireally don't know your transmission, but the alternator problem might've possibly spiked and hurt your shifting solenoids in the ******. don-ohio (:^)
Hello, problem is from the gear box. The gear box has developed a fault and that is why it starts out in 1st will not shift in 2nd will jump in to 3rd . Also, have your gear oil check to be sure it is not short. You need to take the Dodge to your mechanic before the problem gets worse. This is not a DIY (do it yourself) job. If you don't take it to your mechanic on time, you might end up damaging the gear box which is expensive to replace. It is still repairable for now. I hope the above is clear. Regards.
