Had the same problem with a manufactured refurb, would go to 79 %, if you go to power options, change plan settings, change advance power settings, then to the Lenovo energy management tab, press the big enable Lenovo energy management, click on the blue gear to the left of the question mark, if "Optimize for Battery lifespan" is selected it will only charge the battery to 80%, change this to "Optimize for Battery Runtime" and it will charge to 100%
I had the same problem.....it used to say battery plugged but not charging......but now i corrected it......when you use AC power to ur laptop for most of the time..then that battery will degrade faster as it is always in full charge...so the energy management software switches to best battery health mode where the charging wont cross 50%......this is done to preseve ur battery.....you can change this option to optimize for battery runtime option...once you switch on you can see tat battery is charging......I hope it helped you....

This is almost always a problem with a component not working correctly on the motherboard.
Sometimes it's the battery, but not usually.
There's not much you can do other than replace the motherboard.
You could try updating the bios, but it's a long shot.

BUT I can't help you if you're going to leave a negative rating without even replying to my solution.
Bad advice. Don't listen to this guy he has no clue what he is talking about. It is very, very rare that the problem is a motherboard. In fact it is almost never a problem with a bad motherboard. The problem is almost always with the battery itself. This issue is often shows up with cheap Ebay replacement batteries. Some obvious things to try first is Remove and again reinstall the battery. If your OEM battery is not holding a charge very long (but it still charges), then the replacement battery is defective if it does to 100%. Check the battery software (Power Manager) make sure battery settings (threshold is set to 100%) and also try the battery (Perform a battery Reset), this fully discharges and recharges the battery. Lenovo laptops are not always compatible with aftermarket batteries and sometimes will not charge properly with Lenovo software. Some blame Lenovo for trying to force you to buy only from them. When IBM was running things the quality was outstanding but Lenovo does not care about customer satisfaction as much as company profit unfortunately.
Same problem, the support guys it might be motherboard.
But if is the motherboard, update bios is not possible. Because update bios require a charged battery

I had the exact same problem. The battery icon showed "not charging" in the status. Lucky for I have two Lenovo laptops so I swapped batteries. The bad battery will not charge in either laptop but the other battery charges in both laptops. Result is one bad battery both motherboards are good.
Have the X1 carbon on windows 8. Run the Lenovo Settings app, click on power and scroll all the way to the right and you will see battery health mode. If it is set to automatically optimize for battery life, you will only get ~47% charge, set to always fully charge and you should get 100%.
Other than concluding right away that your problem is your motherboard. do check the date from which you purchased your laptop. usually the batteries are good only for a certain period of time. in this case... its between 18 months to 2 years.
what others are saying is for you to do the "swap". from good batteries to old ones or from good laptops using the "supposedly" good batteries.

I recently purchased a Lenovo SL410 and experienced the "loose battery"
problem whenever I transported the laptop out of its case onto my desk.
Apparently,
Lenovo engineered the batteries to "pop off" in the event of a drop or
mishandling, thereby spreading out the force of impact.
So, solution...I always move the thing with two hands and never grip it with only one. Seems to be working.
Oh, and I'm thinking about getting a laptop mount.

I have a similar problem on my Lenovo y530. It says "plugged in, not charging". I can temporarily fix it by removing the battery and putting it back in, but next time my computer shuts down the battery will stop charging again. I got a new battery, but it didn't fix the problem.
If your battery is charged already, you will get this message. If the little brick halfway down your power cord has come loose, it will also stop charging. Check power source first, check power cord and then the battery. Batteries are not covered under warranty after 1yr. Replace battery if it says fully charged but then dies after a few minutes, it has lost most of its' charge-ability.
