I own a nikon fm10. recently the batteries died so i purchased new ones but have hit a bit of a dilemma. the light meter is telling me that i am shooting under exposed photos when i know that they are

I know for sure that the settings at which my camera is telling me under exposed is in return actually over exposed. i shot a full role at the settings that my camera said i should be shooting at and sure enough they returned completely washed out for the most part. i'm a real hands on person and would like to fix this issue myself.

Just to be sure, do you have the film speed set correctly?

yeah i'm pretty familiar with the speed settings. i just know that with my lens pointed towards the sun on 3.5 and 1/60 shouldn't be a green light. Speeds i normally would shoot at that would be in the greenlight range are now completely red minus' in my light meter.

  • kakima Mar 19, 2013

Okay, just wanted to make sure. I know I've gone through entire rolls of film on my FMs with the wrong speed set. I hope you haven't been pointing the camera at the sun very much. That's a good way to burn out a light meter.

Do you have another camera or light meter for comparison? Can you tell whether the FM10 is consistent in its overexposure?

  • Anonymous Mar 19, 2013

as of late it has been pretty consistent. the roll i got was overexposed for sure. i unfortunately do not have another camera or separate light meter. i just know from past experience that it should be saying everything is underexposed at the settings i normally shoot at.

  • kakima Mar 19, 2013

Stretching now, but check the battery contacts and make sure they're clean. Other than that, I don't know what to say. If it's not the battery and contacts then the meter is faulty. Unless you want to take the camera apart to get to the meter...

i will try this as soon as i get home. if not i guess i'll just stick to the sunny 16 rule. do you know of any cheap, reliable light meters?

  • kakima Mar 19, 2013

Sorry, I haven't shopped for light meters recently. Anytime I need a "second opinion" I just put batteries into one of my other eight Nikon SLRs and use its light meter. You can try looking at places likehttp://www.adorama.com/catalog.tpl?op=it... andhttp://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/buy/Lightm...

Sounds like an under-voltage problem. Have you verified that your new batteries are fresh, delivering full voltage? The recommended battery is silver oxide, # 76, S76, 357, SR44 and other equivalents. The voltage is 1.55V per cell. Alkaline and lithium substitutes are not as good because the output voltage declines over the life of the battery.

Nikon FM10 will only release shutter with cable

Hello Blair,
I too like old school camera, mine are the N2000, N6006, N80, and F100. First without film in the camera I would attempt to release the shutter. If it does then there is something going on with the film transfer causing a bind.

However, If it continues not to release the shutter I would put the FM10 on the shelf then go to KEH.com for another. Just now checked KEH.com, 2014-05-26, a FM10 in EX condition is $89, EX+ condition $99. That would be a much better move than repairing yours and less expensive.

Where is serial number nikon fm 10

I can't speak to the FM10 specifically, however nikon has a few standardized positions for the serial number. It may be embossed in in small numbers on the metal at the top back above the film door. Or on the bottom. If you can't find it, I would go to the Nikon USA website. You can e-mail there support department by following this link: Contact Nikon Customer Service Call Nikon Technical Support

Nikon fm10 cannot get shuuter release button to depress or film advance lever to work. is there a lock on shutter release ?

The film lever is also a switch. If you had advanced the film lever, **** it outward a little. You will feel the detent click somewhat when doing so. Leave the lever outward and see if the shutter will work. The detent is for appling an closed circuit for the light meter. When the lever is fully pushed back in it shuts the power to the meter on off to conserve battery power

When yoo wind your film it usually sets the photo button like a trigger. Any decent camera repair can replace the trigger device that has gone bad then your back in business.
