Several years ago I gave my son a Minolta xtsi camera with a Sigma 28-200 AF lens. Last summer I put that lens on my Sony a100 and the lens has not worked properly since, on any minolta or sony camera. The AF servo motor? is almost constantly in motion with a loud sort of ratcheting sound. I was under the impression that minolta lenses would work OK on the Sony. Is there a solution?
I have a somewhat similar problem with my Sigma AF 70-300 DL Macro. AF just stopped working recently. I had it mounted on a Sony a100 for quite a while , working properly until now. Everytime I start or close the camera a whirring can be heard, but silence afterwards and AF not working at all. Can this be fixed? Thanks!

Be aware, most camera's only allow AF to work as long as the aperture is greater than 5,6 (greater aperture means smaller number) So your lens only works from f 5 to 5,6. The last part where the aperture goes to 6,3, the AF won't work. So as long as your setting is on AF, the camera can't focus from a certain focal lenght. Switch over to MF and you should be able to use the zoom all the way.
Minolta had two lens mounts. One for manual focus SLR film cameras and one for Auto Focus SLR Maxxum film and digital SLR cameras. Sony uses Minolta Maxxum lens mount. If the Sigma 400 f5.6 lens was made for Minolta X-700 series, XG, series, XD series, SRT series, then it will not fit on your camera.
its not junk, prob too expensive to fix. but makes a nice fixed focus lens. Quantray were on the same level as vivitar, sigma. So they are now that expensive to replace
It will default to manual through the viewing screen. It will only work on automatic, using the viewfinder. Make sure you also set the focal length (lens to shutter distance). You might also have a mf / af switch on the lens. This also only works through the viewfinder.
I have the same problem. So far I've contacted Sigma (I believe this is the company that manufacturers the Quantaray lens for Ritz) and they requested I send them a photo of the lens. I just googled sigma lens to find sigma support. I will update you all with any response I may get.
Did it ever work on this camera?
I have seen some Sigma lenses that are auto focus on canon film cameras but then when put on the digital they dont work right. If you have used it on this camera then make sure the lens is clean.sometimes dirt on the front wil make it try focusing on the dirt. Next try focusing in manual focus to make sure the focus is working. Then take the lens off and then put it back on and make sure it clicks into place.
Let me know if none of those things work. also make sure to try focus on something close and somthing far away.
