"A possible VRM 1 failure has occurred"

VRM stands for Voltage Regulator Module.

It regulates Voltage for the Processor.

The Processor MUST have a steady, 'clean', supply of Voltage; and it MUST be kept within the tight voltage range, for the Processor.

Too little, or too much; and the Processor turns off. (BIOS turns it off)

Your motherboard supports two Processors.

1) Processor (CPU_0) Zero which is in the middle of the motherboard, next to the PCI Express x16 slot;

2) and Processor (CPU_1) One, which is next to it.

The VRM 1 has failed. Needs to be replaced.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/DELL-H2703-PRECISION-470-670-VRM-VOLTAGE-REGULATOR-MODULE-TH-0H2703-WS470-WS670-/380369885440

VRM's used are interchangeable.

IMHO you can remove Processor 1 (CPU_1), and it's VRM, and still use the computer; albiet slower though.

For additional questions please post in a Comment.

Thanks, I have changed the VRM though and this still does not solve it, where is the VRM located for the primary chip?

Primary chip? We talking the motherboard chipset? And more specifically, the Northbridge chip of the motherboard chipset? That's the capacitors surrounding the Northbridge chip. The Northbridge chip is by CPU_1 (Processor 1) Large black meat tendorizer looking Heatsink, sits on top of the Northbridge chip. The Solid Polymer(?) Capacitors, and the Radial Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors.http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-Precision-6... Solids have a blue mark on one side, on the Top. Radial Aluminum Electrolytics have an X shape on top, and a black plastic sleeve. They are in the Motherboard Voltage Regulator Circuit,http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/6... See any bad 'caps'?http://capacitorlab.com/visible-failures...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lut7MX5Dd...

Tenderizer. VRM's aren't used anymore to my knowledge. Old technology. Part of what the motherboard voltage regulator circuit does; is to regulate voltage for the Processor.

Clarification; "Part of what the motherboard voltage regulator circuit does; is to regulate voltage for the Processor." Should be; No separate Voltage Regulator Module is needed now, because the Processor is now handled by the Motherboard Voltage Regulator Circuit. Could I be wrong? Sure. I'm not Dr.Michio Kaku! lol! Just curious about what you have found out.

Should also state, that it will NOT just be the capacitors close to the Processor. There will be ones involved in the motherboard voltage regulator circuit, AND for the Processor; that may be in outlying areas, and NOT close to the Processor. (Forgot to add that in first comment. Of course reading Hardwaresecrets article, would have cleared that up)

Can I use a SL8MA 2.8 dual core 4mb / 800 fsb processor in a dell precision 670?

I know this is late but it is the CORRECT answer.

Dell used different motherboards in the Precision 670 and they are listed as follows:
X0392XC837MG022U7565
I am running the XC837 motherboard and it WILL support the SL8MA processors. I have been told that the XC837 is the ONLY motherboard what will support the Dual Core Paxville Processors. If you are trying to use them in a 470 you will need XC838 Motherboard.

Dell Precision Workstation 670

Try different memory modules ( RAM ) and see if it is just the RAM.

Also take anything else out you dont need - including dedicated graphics card assuming it has onboard graphics card ( if so then enable the onboard graphics card before taking out the dedicated one )

If its still the same then yes it is the motherboard in which case you need the motherboard replacing.

If you did the diagnostics that they walk you through and they still tell you its the motherboard then it will be the motherboard as there diagnostic software is accurate.
