I'm pretty sure you want to use gear oil in the crankcase of a two-stroke,(like 80wt Bel Ray).
Standard "car weight" motor oils are 4 stroke, designed to lube the crank & cylinders. your '03 RM has the cylinders lubed by the pre-mix...
A motorcycle specific crankcase lube is the best bet; lots of differing opinions on the wet-clutch aspect.
Not sure on the older Virago....but on the newer ones....its located as follows.. On the riders left side of engine...near the front...find the fill cap for adding oil....now look directly below and you will find a round window on the side of the crankcase down low. Usually Yamaha has two marks on the crankcase beside the window for Min and Max oil level. Usually half way between works best.

oil getting on a breather can indicate excessive crankcase pressure. Check all the `crankcase breathers and the valve cover breathers.
if the crankcase has been overfilled with engine oil. The crankshaft has to "beat" it's way through the oil and thus acts as a pump and sends oil all over the internal surfaces of the crankcase.
If the engine cylinders have developed 'blow-by" they will also contribute to an increase in crankcase pressure which will be evident by oil in the breathers. The fumes / pressure in the crankcase are designed to be removed by the engine breather system, and drawn through the engine etc.
Typically , the threads in the crankcase are what get stripped out. Find a dealer that has oversize drain bolts and have them tap the drain hole in the crankcase out to the next size bolt. That is the best fix for a stripped drain bolt hole. Always be careful, when changing your oil , to only tight the filter and the drain bolt (with soft aluminum sealing washer) enough to seal the oil in . Over tightening will only make the next oil change harder with the possibility of this happening again.
If we are talking about a 2004 YZ450F, you should always run the engine before taking an accurate dipstick check. This is a dry sump engine with the oil stored in the frame. The dipstick is located up high on the frame. You are not checking the oil level in the crankcase as the "Best Solution" dipstick suggested. In theory the oil is held up in thank when the engine is not running. However, most all of them have a tendency to have oil seep/leak out of the frame reservoir down into the crankcase. There is a check ball in the right crankcase cover that usually leaks if the engine has any hours on it at all. The dipstick up on the frame rarely reads accurate unless you have started the engine and let the oil pump circulate oil back up into the frame where it can be measured on the dipstick. Any mechanic who has had hands on experience knows this. The same is true for owners of dry sump XR's and Harleys, who all know to run the engine before final oil check. If you are going to to answer a tech question you need to have some experience with that model instead of your XR80.
Use 10w40 motor oil in the gear box. Don't use any synthetic oils, oil marked "EC", or oil with "special" additives.
Use Two Stroke ENGINE oil in the pump. If not doing an automatic oil pump the mix the gas and oil 32 to 1. That equals 4 ounces of two stroke ENGINE oil to one gallon of gas. NEVER use motor oil in the gas. Only two stroke engine oil.
If I am understanding this correctly, with gas in the crankcase, it is usually a stuck float needle that is allowing fuel to drain into the chamber and run down past the piston. The best way to remedy this is to remove the carb and clean it thoroughly. This will also happen if it has sat for awhile and the fuel will gum up and keep the needle from closing. If you don't want to pull the carb, pull the bowl and look in the bottom. If there is anything in there besides gas (dirt, minerals, etc.), the carb need cleaning and you may need to replace the needle as well. Hope this helps
