Have you updated your unit's software from the Garmin site? There was a new satellite launched in 2008 which has been causing problems, and the new update fixes this.
You need to either Disable "WAAS" in the
Setup>system>WAAS>Disable
as there's a firmware bug that causes the unit to freeze up and get that line when it loses satellites, or you need to update your firmware

I have the same problem on one of 20 etrex legends. I just downloaded the update from the Garmin website and it seems to be doing the trick. Time will tell. It is worth trying and only takes a few minutes.

Zactly!
Sometimes I get the first two screens, then it happens . Other times I can be scrolling through or just click on an option and it will go blank except for the vertical line (seems to be either on the right or the left on the screen). Bottom line is I don't know when it will happen, so it pretty much makes the unit useless. I see on Garmins website that they will refurbish my unit for a mere $79.00 plus shippng.
Would be nice to get some help from them on this, but then they can't sell more units, and I also saw where they are dropping the Legend and going to the h series as a recommended replacement.
I have a Garmin Etrex Vista that has the same problem. I put new batteries in it and it works for a short period of time, then the screen goes blank and a vertical line appears. The only way to turn it off is to take out the batteries. When I replace them, the same thing happens but the line sometimes moves to another part of the blank screen.
Same problem, not sure why?
I was experiencing the exact same problem in Pennsylvania in fall of 2008. I am going to try updating the software.
