    Zactly!

Sometimes I get the first two screens, then it happens . Other times I can be scrolling through or just click on an option and it will go blank except for the vertical line (seems to be either on the right or the left on the screen). Bottom line is I don't know when it will happen, so it pretty much makes the unit useless. I see on Garmins website that they will refurbish my unit for a mere $79.00 plus shippng.

Would be nice to get some help from them on this, but then they can't sell more units, and I also saw where they are dropping the Legend and going to the h series as a recommended replacement.

I have a Garmin Etrex Vista that has the same problem. I put new batteries in it and it works for a short period of time, then the screen goes blank and a vertical line appears. The only way to turn it off is to take out the batteries. When I replace them, the same thing happens but the line sometimes moves to another part of the blank screen.

    Same problem, not sure why?

  • Anonymous May 10, 2009

I was experiencing the exact same problem in Pennsylvania in fall of 2008. I am going to try updating the software.

Have you updated your unit's software from the Garmin site? There was a new satellite launched in 2008 which has been causing problems, and the new update fixes this.

You need to either Disable "WAAS" in the
Setup>system>WAAS>Disable
as there's a firmware bug that causes the unit to freeze up and get that line when it loses satellites, or you need to update your firmware

Correct, just update your firmware for your unit and all will be well again.

I have the same problem on one of 20 etrex legends. I just downloaded the update from the Garmin website and it seems to be doing the trick. Time will tell. It is worth trying and only takes a few minutes.

My garmin etrex legend screen goes blank with a vertical line on the screen after about 5 minutes od operation

Unfortunately the only fix for this is to send it back to Garmin for repair. This one can go one of two ways. Either the screen is faulty in which case it's a quick fix and you go away happy, or it's a software fault.. In which case I'd ask for a new one because in my experience most software faults with Garmin devices become recurring problems even though they clear and reprogramme them invariably we see them coming back with more software issues..

My Garmin Etrex Legend starts up and finds the satellites, but then screen goes blank except for vertical line on the screen.Stays that way until batteries wear out. Fixable?

I have the same Garmin product. It had a problem displaying anything. I went to the Garmin web site and got tech support. They fixed the problem by telling me what to do. Try them befor you throw it away. But it sounds un-repairable

Etrex Legend locks up, screen blank except vertical line

Is the unit being bumped during use? If not, sounds like a call to Garmin tech support is in the works. My thought is that it's something defective inside your unit.

Problem with display

Try updating the unit's software via the Garmin website. There was a satellite launched last year which was causing this problem, and updating the unit's software fixes this. Don't forget to come back and tell us if this fix worked for you.

Screen goes blank after locating sattilites.

Accordingto Garmin, this problem can be fixed by disabling the WAAS feature in teh set up menu. There is an incompatibility between the old Garmin software and latest WAAS upgrades. Later software from Garmin is supposed to fix this problem.

GPSr shuts off

Firmware needs to be upgraded on these units because the atellites are changing every so often so does the programming in these units, check to see if there is a firmware upgrade to fix these problems, the line in the middle of the screen is because it either hung during the process or the units lcd is going bad.

You have to update the unit's software from the Garmin site. A new satellite was launched last year which causes this problem. Updating the software fixes it.

If this solves your problem, please come back and rate the post as "fixed". Thanks

Garmin etrex (basic version) - display suddenly changes to single vertical line, after a few minutes indoors and immediately outdoors when satellite signal available

I had the same problem with the eTrex Legend (monochrome) and tried the solution of taking it apart, cleaning the connections and putting it back together. This did not work for me. I then updated the firmware to version 3.9 and that solved the vertical line problem, at least for the time being.

Unit decides to display a thin vertical line randomly

Try updating your unit software via Garmin.com. The US launched a new satellite earlier this year, causing problems with WAAS. You can disable WAAS as a temporary fix but updating your unit's software should provide a permanent fix. Let us know if this solves your problem.

Garmin etrex legend

I had this problem today, updated the software, now the unit seems to be working perfectly. The unit "crashes" (single line down screen center) as soon as it get enough satelites to work with WAAS.

Go to Garmin site for software updates. Download and install the WebUpdater. Once or unit is hooked up to your computer and you have internet access, the software will download and update your GPS with the latest software fixes. I had software Version 3.7. For the Legend, Version 3.9 fixes the problems with WAAS.
