Try pushing down on the lid, if the machine starts to drain and spin you need to adjust the hinge on the lt side. To do this you need to take the screws most of the way out on the back of the control panel ( on the end caps). Then remove the spring clamps that hold the cabinet onto the base. Use a screwdriver into the front of the clamp and press to the back of the machine, then unhook the connector for the lid switch. Pull the cabinet forward and you will be able to see the hinge, use a channel lock or pliers to bend the end of the hinge towards the back of the machine, the lid will need to be open to adjust the hinge. it will only take a small adjustment. After adjusting shut the lid and listen for the click to see if it was enough. Hope this helps

Most likely it's the door switch that tells the washing machine that the door is open or closed.
It's usually on a lever of some sort as to not get the actual switch wet that contacts the door itself.
With the older machines in particular, they didn't find filling or agitating as dangerous. Only spinning was considered that way, so it could fill and agitate with the door open and spin only when it was closed. When it spins, it also turns the impeller (pump) in the direction to pump the water out.
The other possibility is that the transmission or motor has gone bad. The motor and transmission turn in one direction for agitation and in the opposite direction for spin. If the gears have stripped in the transmission or one of the primary windings has gone on the motor, it simply won't turn in that direction.
