Printer with parallel port not "seen" on my Mac

I have a Ricoh 3800 C color laser printer that works fine on Windows systems but won't link up with my Mac. I have a USB-parallel cable and have installed the drivers on the Mac but nothing I do seems to find the printer. Also, running Windows under Parallels doesn't work either. I am using OSX 10.5.6 Leopard. Any suggestions?

I've never had much luch running parallel printers on UNIX systems, it seems that a serial connection works without any trouble.

At any rate, have you tried hooking it up to a stationary windows machine, and then sharing it using windows networking.

Then, you could simply print to it by using SMB...

I've done this before and it seems to work fine.

You'll probably have to turn SMB services (SAMBA) on if they are not on already, and then when you 'add' the printer, you'll print to a port with syntax like:

    SMB:\\192.168.0.100

or something similar. I believe OS/X has that fairly well documented.

HP LaserJet 1022 is a "host-based" printer so it must be connected to a PC. Load the driver on PC first and connect the USB cable when software tells you to do so.

Will not work on a Linksys print server.

LaserJet 1022N & LaserJet 1022NW have "special" HP print servers that can support HP host based printers.

I recently acquired an NEC SuperScript 1260 laser printer but I need an adapter cable so it will work off my computer (Vista). I need a pin connector for the printer on one end and USB for computer. The...

The NEC SuperScript 1260 has a parallel printer port. So you would need a parallel to usb adapter. These aren't very expensive; depending on the brand and length you'll pay between $8 and $15. See https://www.amazon.com/TRENDnet-Parallel-Converter-10-6-10-9-TU-P1284/dp/B0007T27HS or https://www.amazon.com/Sabrent-Parallel-Printer-Adapter-CB-CN36/dp/B00IDU0T1Y Alternatively, if you have a desktop, you can find a PCI or PCI-e add-on card with a parallel port, depending on the slots available in the system. These will be closer to $20 to $30. Then you need a standard parallel printer cable. Many computer parts sites, including Amazon.com, will have both.

A bigger problem may be the printer drivers. NEC did not update the drivers after Windows XP. (Some XP drivers will work under Vista.) NEC doesn't supply the drivers on their site: https://support.necam.com/Printers/Drivers/ . They refer you to the original driver CD that came with the printer. A few sites may have these drivers online. However, I haven't seen a link to a known trust-worthy site with the XP driver.

I hope this helps. Please add a comment if you need more information.

I am working with Leopard Mac OS X 10.5.8 and cannot find a printer driver for my RICOH Aficio 3800C. Please can you tell me where I can find it and how to install it.

You can get the AP3800C Mac driver directly from Ricoh here:

http://ricoh-usa.com/downloads/downloads.asp?tsn=Ricoh-USA&path=http://support.ricoh.com/bb/html/dr_ut_e/rc2/model/p3800c/p3800cen.htm

If this link doesn't work, follow these steps:

- Go to Ricoh-USA.com
- Click Downloads on the blue bar along the top
- Click "Download Ricoh Drivers & Software"
- Select the AP3800C from the drop-down list under Printers, B&W/Color/Gel and then click Go
- Choose your operating system from the list
- Download the two files listed under Mac OS X 10.5

Once the files are downloaded, you should be able to install the print driver normally.

Hope that helps!
