Did you do ALL your windows update before the Service Pack? That SP has been out for years? Doesn't your laptop have Windows Updates set to Auto? Choose one or the other, Vista or Win 7 and do a Full Install.
You may need to check to see which "service pack" you are currently on.
See below requirements:

Not Supported:
Windows Vista 64-bit (any version)

Windows Vista Home and Home Premium Edition
Although Windows Vista Home and Home Premium Edition have not
been tested or qualified by Digidesign, there are currently no known
issues with Vista Home and Home Premium 32-bit operating systems and
Pro Tools M-Powered 7.4 compared to the supported Windows Vista
Business or Ultimate Edition operating systems.
Windows Vista SP1
There are currently no known issues with Service Pack 1 for Windows
Vista based on our initial limited testing and customer feedback.
Although full qualification with all Digidesign products has not been
completed, we do not recommend against updating to SP1, given the number of important overall system fixes in SP1. We do
recommend that you backup your system and create a restore point before
updating to SP1, should you encounter any problems after installing the
update.
I want to stop you there.
You should stick with Windows Vista SP1 because Sp2 has A LOT of program incapability problems (e.g. some games will not work in SP2, but work fine in SP1).

click on start
in start search type in RUN and press enter you will get a box to type in just type in rsturi.exe and press enter
you will get system restore option restore your system when you didn't install VISTA sp1
Vista sp1 have some problems and microsoft is working to fix that but it will take some time.
you shouldn't have installed vista service pack 1
its a known issue with vista service pack 1
if u had vista before and u updated it to sp1...i would suggest you to either do a system restore and uninstall sp1
or install XP back
sp1 isn't a problem, it's a service pack that's intended to make vista better.
