I need to replace the lid switch but I can't get the top up.There is a release on both sides, but I can't trip it.

The rear compartment lid release system consists of the following components:
• Body control module (BCM)
• Folding top cover actuator
• GMLAN serial data link
• Keyless entry transmitter
• Rear compartment lid ajar switch
• Rear compartment lid release actuator
• Rear compartment lid release switch
• Remote control door lock receiver (RCDLR)
• Trunk fuses
• Trunk release relay

Rear Compartment Lid Release System Operation
The rear compartment lid can be released by operating the rear compartment lid release switch or pressing the rear compartment lid release button on the keyless entry transmitter. When the rear compartment lid release switch is operated, the rear compartment lid release switch signal circuit to the body control module (BCM) is switched to ground. The BCM receives the rear compartment lid release switch input and applies ground to the trunk release relay control circuit. This energizes the trunk release relay coil, closing the switch side contacts, allowing battery voltage to be applied to the rear compartment lid release actuator and folding top cover actuator, releasing the buttresses and opening the rear compartment lid. Ground for the rear compartment lid release switch is provided at G300. The rear compartment lid ajar switch, rear compartment lid release actuator, and folding top cover actuator are provided ground at G301. The rear compartment lid will not release until the vehicle speed is zero and in park.

VEHICLE RELAYS Operation Diagnosis

When the rear compartment lid release switch is pushed, the rear compartment lid release signal circuit to the body control module (BCM) is grounded. BCM then grounds the coil side of the trunk release relay through the trunk release relay control circuit. With this voltage is applied to the rear compartment lid release actuator, opening the rear compartment.
Rear Compartment Lid Release Relay

1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the trunk relay.
2. Test for 65-90 ohms of resistance between terminals 85 and 86.

If the resistance is not within the specified range, replace the trunk relay.

3. Test for infinite resistance between the following terminals:

30 and 87

30 and 85

85 and 87

If less than infinite resistance, replace the relay.


4. Install a 10-amp fused jumper wire between relay terminal 85 and 12 volts. Install a jumper wire between relay terminal 86 and ground. Measure for less than 2 ohms of resistance between terminals 30 and 87.

If greater than 2 ohms, replace the relay.

Rear Compartment Lid Release Relay Malfunction

1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the trunk relay.
2. Verify that a test lamp illuminates between the coil side B+ circuit of the trunk relay and ground.

If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the B+ circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal and the B+ circuit fuse is open, test the voltage control circuit for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, test or replace the trunk relay.

3. Verify that a test lamp illuminates between the switch side B+ circuit of the trunk relay and ground.

If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the B+ circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance.

4. Disconnect the harness connector at the rear compartment lid latch.
5. Ignition OFF, test for less than 5 ohm of resistance between the rear compartment lid latch ground circuit and ground.

If greater than the specifed range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.

6. Connect a test lamp between the trunk release relay control circuit and the coil side B+ circuit of the trunk relay.
7. Command the trunk release solenoid ON and OFF with a scan tool.

If the test lamp remains ON all the time, test the control circuit for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.

If the test lamp remains OFF all the time, test the control circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.


8. Connect the harness connector at the rear compartment lid latch.
9. Connect a 3-amp fused jumper wire between the switch side B+ circuit of the trunk relay and the voltage control circuit of the lid latch. Verify that the lid latch activates.

If the lid latch does not activate, test the control circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, test or replace the rear compartment lid latch.

10. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the trunk relay.

Component Testing
Rear Compartment Lid Release Switch

1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the rear compartment lid release switch.
2. Test for infinite resistance between the trunk release switch supply voltage and ground terminals with the switch in the open position.

If less than infinite resistance, replace the rear compartment lid release switch.

3. Test for less than 2 ohms of resistance between the trunk release switch supply voltage and ground terminals with the switch in the closed position.

If greater than 2 ohms, replace the rear compartment lid release switch.

4. Test for infinite resistance between each terminal and the lid release switch housing/case.

If less than infinite resistance, replace the rear compartment lid release switch.

Could be the relay , could be the switch , could be a problem with the BCM !

On that stack washer/dryer the wayto get to lid switch is
remove diagonal panel between washer and control panel
in the back of washer top will either be 2 brass colored clips or in the very back egde of top will be 2 5/16th inch hexhead screws
for clips place a small screwdriver in front of that clip and pop clips off and slide top forward
for the screws remove screws from behind top in the left/right corner..pull top forward a bit and lift up a little the plug for the lid switch will be in front right side..squeeze the release for that plug,unplug swicth plug then remove top

in both cases lid switch asm. will be on right side of top on the underpart of it

Disconnect power then release the console from the top of the cabinet depending on the model of your machine then pull forward and up on the console and lay it back on the hinges.








Disconnect the lid switch harness connector by pressing on the tab located in the middle and pulling it up.


The cabinet is attached to the rear of the washer by two brass-colored retaining clips. Insert a flat blade screwdriver into the turned-up edge of the clip, located on both sides, and then pry back to release the clip from the slot in the cabinet.


Open and hold the lid while grabbing the cabinet front opening then tilt the top of the cabinet toward you by pulling the cabinet away from the base. This releases the front and back slots of the cabinet from the tabs in the front and back of the base.


Using the side of your leg and/or body as a support for the front of the cabinet, carefully lift up the cabinet and lay the front on a cushioned floor to access the lid switch.



Remove the lid switch ground and mounting screws then release the wire harness from the metal retainers. Pull the lid switch connector out and install the new lid switch in reverse order of the removal steps.


Bring the cabinet to the front of the washer then slide the front bottom rail of the cabinet under the rail at the base of the machine then lay down the cabinet into position. Make sure the slots in the cabinet sit into the tabs at the base of machine. Reconnect the lid switch harness then push the retaining clips back down into position to secure the cabinet to the rear of the machine. Reinstall and secure the console to complete the repair.

This is a clear evidence of a broken lid switch. Power to the drive motor is routed through the lid switch. The machine, therefore, will not turn on when the lid switch is not working. Manually activate the lid switch and if still doesn't work, bypass the lid switch. Disconnect power then jump a wire between the outer terminals of the disconnected connector from the cabinet top then reconnect power. Replace the lid switch to address the problem if the machine works with the lid switch bypassed.

Release the console from the top of the cabinet depending on the model of your machine then pull forward and up on the console and lay it back on the hinges.

Different style than yours. On yours you need to remove the front panel by pushing in the clips in between the top lid and front panel there is one on each side. This will release the front panel just tip it forward and lift up once the clips release.

Possible lid switch problem, can be shorted out to prove, open the top complete lid for access. To do this insert a flat blade 4" from each side at the front panel between the front panel and lid to release the clips, lid will now lift and switch is on the underside of the lid RH side, short wires and test spin, replace switch if machine runs, do not leave machine with switch shorted and ensure supply is isolated as necessary.

First of all, unplug your washer. You will need to remove the console in order to get to the lid switch. The washer may have release tabs under the console at each front corner. Simply slide a putty knife straight in from the front at each corner and push in while lifting up. You should feel the release tabs push in and the console will pop up. If not equipped with this type of console, you may have a console that has removable end caps. They can be removed by gently prying up on the top of them from the rear on each side. You may have to use a small screwdriver for this. The caps should pop right off. Once removed, you will need to loosen a screw under each cap. Once you have the console loosened, carefully lift it up and lay it back over the rear panel of the washer in its resting position. Be careful not to damage the small plastic hinges that hold it in place. Now you will need to perform the following steps:

1. Under the console you will find the lid switch connector. Unplug the switch from the connector.

2. There will be two brass colored clips. You will need to remove these to remove the machine casing. Place a flat blade screwdriver straight down into the opening on top of the washer and into the groove of the clip. Push the screwdriver away from you while holding into the groove and the clip will release.

3. Open the lid of the washer and place your hand under the front rim of the opening (DO NOT grab the wash tub). Now pull the case from the frame by lifting from the back first.

You do not have to remove it all the way from the frame, just enough to gain access to the switch. All there is to the switch is a couple of screws holding it in and a ground wire. It's a pretty easy repair job. Some models will have the switch located on the right-hand side of the lid rim opening, while other models will have the switch located on the left-hand side near the lid hinge.

Once you've completed your switch installation, make sure you get the case back on the frame correctly by following these steps:

1. While looking down through the lid opening, place the front lip of the machine case UNDER the washer frame and start leaning it back onto the frame. There are four small cleats that must fit into four slots on the case or the washer will vibrate. Make sure the frame is seated properly, lean forward from the front of the washer, grasp both sides of the rear panel and pull towards the case. The rear panel should be seated and flush with the casing before inserting the retaining clips.

2. Insert the brass-colored clips into the slot on the washer rear panel first, and then push straight down into the opening on the top of the washer with some force. If you have the case seated correctly, the clips will snap back in.

3. Make sure you plug the connector from the console back into the lid switch receptacle BEFORE you reassemble the console. This is easy to forget.

Ok folks to change the lid switch on these and many top loading Whirlpool, Maytag, Kenmore, etc is quite easy.

Steps to replace the lid switch:

1. Remove unit from AC.
2. Remove the loading door from the unit, or using some duct tape tape it closed.
3. Using a small flat bladed screwdriver find the 2 release catches on the front of the unit between the top cover and front panel. These are just snap claps to hold the top cover down. To release the top you will need to compress the latch using the screwdriver. Start with one side, then the other. Once you have released both clips the lid will lift up just like the hood of your car.
4. You will now be able to remove the lid switch from the unit.
5. Install the new switch and close the hood of the unit.
6. Test the repair by running the unit though a complete cycle.

To access the lid switch:
1.Remove the trim on either side by prying off from the top. Grasp the trim at the top and pull forward to expose to expose a screw.
2. You will find a lid switch connector (white in color). Unplug the switch from the connector.
3. There will be two brass colored clips. Place a flat blade screwdriver straight down into the opening on top of the washer and into the groove of the clip. Push the screwdriver down and away from you and the clip will release.
4. Open the lid of the washer and place your hand under the front rim of the opening (DO NOT grab the wash tub). Tilt and slide cabinet forward to remove.
