Have you checked that it is selected as an output device in the control panel. Also check that the drivers are correctly installed in device manager, there should be no yellow icons.
You can download the audio and device drivers from Dell WEB site, the support download page. Make sure you select your model desktop or laptop, better still, type in the Service Tag number, it is printed on the label on the bottom of the laptop and on the back or sides of a desktop. (If the Service Tag label is missing then go into the BIOS setting and on one of the BIOS pages, the Service Tag number will be displayed). This will open the page where the specific drivers for your model computer are located. Also make sure you select the Windows of the drivers for your Windows operating system. Click on this link to download the drivers: - http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen

You can download the audio drivers for your laptop from thelaptop manufacturer's WEB site. I cannot give you the link to the laptop manufacturer's WEB site because youhave not provided me with the details of the make and model of your laptop.
It is necessary to download the audio drivers from the dell website. www.dell.com. Type in your model number and it will show you a list of drivers. Windows often install a generic audio driver, but what you need is the one from the Dell website
You need to find the audio driver software, for your computer. try searching the official site of the computers manufacturer (with google.com), then enter the official site, click support, then find your pc model. Then download the Audio Driver, install it, restart the system and it's solved.
If you can't do it yourself, ask a PC Service Shop, it's a process that takes a half-hour. Dont Worry!!
You'll want to check your Device Manager to verify that it sees a sound
card installed. This can be done by right clicking the "My Computer"
icon, and selecting manage. Now on the left side, click device manager.
Scroll down on the right side to the sound entries. Verify that none of
the icons have a yellow exclamation mark next to them. If they do, then
windows is having trouble finding drivers or possibly having troubles
with another card conflicting with it. If this is the case, then you
can go to hp.com (I know you have a compaq, but HP is compaq now), and
click search for drivers. Input your computer model number, and locate
the audio drivers. Then just reinstall them.
