How to set the radio to talk

Repair shop. If the radio is cheap, then replace the broken set as engineers time is expensive. If the new set or sets are on the same channel then you have three working sets.

Activate the "channel monitor" button on one radio while talking on the other and see if you can hear the voice. Then reverse the procedure: talk on the first one while holding the monitor button on the other one. If both radios work with the monitor button held down but will not work without then the CTCSS or CDCSS squelch codes aren't set to the same tone or digital frequency or code. Consult the manual for more information.

First, we suggest checking to see the radios are on the same frequency, interference eliminator code and the Qt filter is set to off or zero. Once you have determined the radios are set alike, you should be able to use the radios by pressing the push-to-talk button when you want to talk, and releasing it when you want to listen to the other radio(s) talking back to you.

turn them on ... choose a channel to talk on ... press the press to talk button.

You may have a defective radio that has a bad push to talk switch which doesn't mute the receiver and feeds back audio to itself or this could be a bad solder connection or a broken wire inside.
Not much you can do except replace it or have a tech look at it.

There are two different kinds of beeps you can control, the "roger" beep and the "button" beeps. Below is an excerpt from the owners manual explaining the simple procedure.

“Roger” Beeps/Talk Confirmation Tone
When you turn this feature On, your two-way radio transmits a unique tone when
you finish transmitting. It’s like saying “Roger” or “Over” and lets others know
you have finished talking. If the person you are talking to does not hear the talk
confirmation tone, you can enable it by pressing and holding + (plus) as you turn On
your radio. Now, whenever you release the PTT, you let your friends know you have
finished talking by transmitting a “Roger” Beep tone. “Roger” Beeps will be
disabled as the Default Setting.
Note: To toggle the Talk Confirmation Tone feature, turn your radio Off and then
back On while pressing and holding + (plus) .

Button Beeps
Every time you press a button on the front of your radio, it beeps unless you turn
Button Beeps Off. To turn Button Beeps Off, turn your radio On while you press - (minus) and
hold . To turn Button Beeps back On, turn the radio Off and then back On again
while you press and hold the - (minus) . On is the Default setting.

To change channel & code press talk and monitor while turning radio on. Radio will speak current channel. Release both talk and monitor. Press talk to change to next channel or press monitor to keep current channel. Press monitor when desired channel is selected, radio will speak current code. Press talk to change to next code or press monitor to keep current code. Press talk to change code as desired then press monitor when done. Will speak channel and code selected. Set all units in same manner to communicate.

If your radios are set identical to one another, you simple need to press the push-to-talk button (PTT) and hold it in while talking. Let go when you are not talking, in order for the other person to be able to press their PTT and talk back to you. The monitor button is only for checking to see if other users are talking on your same frequency, and if so, you are to be polite and not talk over the top of them. (So the rules say.)

Have you checked the QT filter? The T5950 have an addtional interference filter called the QT filter. It filters out other radios and allows Motorola radios to speak only to other Motorola radios with the filter. Check the QT setting on both radios by pushing the menu button 6 times, the QT setting will show. If it shows a straight line on the display the filter is not on. Now push the + button (beside the menu button), to turn the QT filter on (a Y will show on the screen when on) or the - button to turn it off (the line will show when filter is off). The radios have to match all channels and all filters to talk to each other.

If you are using vox (voice activated transmit) go into the menu and make sure you don't have the VOX setting too high. You should be able to put the headset on... hit the "push to talk" button on the radio and transmit you audio. Turn the other radio on and make sure the radio is "keying" (tx with no auio) then make sure there is audio. If you don't have audio but the radio is transmitting.. you might have the wrong type of plug on your headset for the audio..... there are 2 plugs... 1 for transmit audio....1 for recieve audio. It could be the wrong type of plug for the jack in the radio. Regardless.. the way the headset works is either you push the "push to talk button" onj the radio OR you use the VOX function... with the vox function you just have to talk into the mic to transmit. This is what your headset is designed for. You will have to go into the menu and set up the radio for VOX. If you still have problems follow my directions at the top of this page ( check mic jack and stuff) I think you just have to set the radio up for VOX operation and set the VOX setting. You should be able to push the push to talk button and talk through the mic on the headset. If you don't get any audio that way there is a problem and you should check the jack and plug on the headset.
